Reflections for K9 Mick

I remember the night I heard of Mick's death on the news and it hit hard. I shed tears for his brave heroism and have never forgotten him til this day.
I recently had the pleasure of meeting a K-9 officer with his dog and struck up a conversation, telling him "I remember a K-9 on the news that was shot maybe 5 years back during a burglary call, have never forgotten it...." and outlined the story looking for a possible answer. Well, it was Mick, and that officer had actually been on that call. It felt good to share. What can one say about a very special dog that made the ultimate sacrifice, besides admire their bravery and heart to protect and serve. One can only stand in awe at these brave dogs who go into situations too dangerous for officers, and with no hesitation. Mick lives on and is never forgotten!

To Mick's Officer/friend: I cried when the news came on the local news at the loss of your K9 partner, Mick. I am a citizen volunteer for CPD in Washington. My German Shepherd, Aili(pronounced Ilee has accompanied me to many events since she was a 4 month old puppy(now 3). Children/people enjoy meeting her and can pet her, whereas the working K-9s from the dept are busy. You have been prayed for.Mick will always be remembered.

IN MEMORY OF K9 MICK

To the family, friends, and colleagues of K9 Mick:

From the beginning of time after Cain killed his brother, Abel, there has been a need for law enforcement officers to protect the weak and to bring evildoers to justice. This work is necessary in a sinful world and is dangerous. In 2014, some eight law enforcement canines have sacrificed their lives to protect their handlers and the citizens of this great nation. Today, we honor the sacrifice of K9 Mick, of the Portland, Oregon Police Bureau, who was shot and killed in the line-of-duty while pursuing one of three burglary suspects on Wednesday, April 16, 2014, in Portland, Oregon.

Lord God, we are grateful for the life of K9 Mick. He died serving us. Help us never to forget. Help us celebrate the life of K9 Mick and honor his sacrifice. Be with the family, friends, and colleagues of this fallen hero. Comfort them and give them your strength. Guide those who seek to take care of the family of this hero. May those empowered to do so, care for them with integrity. In commemorating the death of this hero, help those who mourn to remember that death is not the end. Death does not have the final say, but is simply the transition to the glorious life to come. Dogs do go to heaven! They should look forward to that life to come with joy and thanksgiving.

As for the citizens of Portland, Oregon, help them to faithfully equip their police officers and canines with the best tools to protect their community. May their training be adequate to the task. Help the citizens of Portland, Oregon, to remember to fund their canine programs adequately and treat their canine heroes with respect. Help the citizens of Portland, Oregon, to obey the law and treat each other with dignity so as not to add to the burden of crime and pain to their community.

The time for mourning will soon pass. We have now remembered and celebrated the life lost in this great tragedy. As the family, friends, and colleagues of K9 Mick go forward, they must celebrate the good things in their lives; and to celebrate life itself!

Finally, Lord God, we pray for the families, friends, and colleagues of all the law enforcement officers and canines who have been killed in the line-of-duty and we thank you for their sacrifices. Bless the lives of their families, friends, and colleagues so they might find healing. Help their law enforcement organizations support the families of these fallen heroes. Even though their deaths might have been senseless, make something good come out of these situations so that their law enforcement organizations and the communities in which they lived and served might be stronger because of their lives and their deaths.

Amen.

Lord God, hear our prayers.

Now, may the Lord bless you, and keep you: the Lord make His face to shine upon you, and be gracious unto you: the Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace. Amen.

Rest in peace buddy. You served your handler and Department well.

Guardians of the Night

Trust in me my friend for I am your comrade.
I will protect you with my last breath.
When all others have left you
And the loneliness of the night closes in,
I will be at your side.
Together we will conquer all obstacles
And search out those who might wish harm to others.
All I ask of you is compassion,
The caring touch of your hands.
It is for you that I will selflessly give my life
And spend my nights unrested.
Although our days together
May be marked by the passing of the seasons.
Know that each day at your side is my reward.
My days are measured by
The coming and going of your footsteps.
I anticipate them at the opening of the door.
You are the voice of caring when I am ill.
The voice of authority over me when I've done wrong.
Do not chastise me unduly
For I am your right arm,
The sword at your side.
I attempt to do only what you bid of me.
I seek only to please you and remain in your favor.
Together you and I shall experience
A bond only others like you will understand.
When outsiders see us together
Their envy will be measured by their disdain.
I will quietly listen to you
And pass no judgement.
Nor will your spoken words be repeated.
I will remain ever silent,
Ever vigilant, ever loyal.
And when our time together is done
And you move on in the world,
Remember me with kind thoughts and tales.
For a time we were unbeatable,
Nothing passed among us undetected.
If we should ever meet again on another field
I will gladly take up your fight.
I am a Police Working Dog and together
We are GUARDIANS of the NIGHT.
