K9 Nyx was shot and killed while tracking a suspect involved in a domestic incident.

Officers were investigating a domestic situation and searching for the suspect. When K9 Nyx tracked the suspect to the 2900 Block of 11th Street in Rockford, gunfire ensued. K9 Nyx was shot and killed by the suspect.

The suspect sustained a non-life-threatening wound to his leg and was apprehended.

Nyx served with the Rockford Police Department for almost 6 years. She was trained in narcotics detection, evidence recovery, human tracking, and apprehension.

R.I.P. Nyx and God bless his handler. I live less than a mile from where this happened and lost my own dog right around the same time. I've lost plenty of friends but losing my dog hurt just as much.
