Orofino
K9 Orofino was shot and killed as his handler and other troopers conducted surveillance at the site of a marijuana grow in Breathitt County.
As they left the area K9 Orofino walked ahead of his handler and two other troopers. After he rounded a bend the troopers heard a shotgun blast and a yelp. The troopers ran to K9 Orofino and viewed a hunter holding a shotgun. When he was told to drop the weapon he threw the shotgun down the hill.
The subject was immediately apprehended. Charges were dropped when the hunter claimed that he thought K9 Orofino was a stray dog. The necropsy revealed that K9 Orofino was not in attack mode when he was shot.
K9 Orofino had served with the Kentucky State Police for four years.
