K9 Hatos died as the result of heat exhaustion while tracking two escapees from the correctional center.
Hatos successfully tracked the two subjects until they were apprehended but suddenly collapsed as he and his handler returned to their car. He was immediately transported to a local animal emergency room where he passed away.
K9 Hatos had served with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office for one year.
