K9 Niko was shot and killed while attempting to apprehend a subject who was known to run from police.
Niko was assisting a multi-agency task force as they served a warrant on the felon. Niko was released on the subject, but instead bit a deputy United States marshal the subject was struggling with. The marshal shot Niko because the canine would not release his bite.
K9 Niko had served with the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office for five years. He had 57 apprehensions and had assisted in over 400 arrests.
