\n
\nPatrolman Long was finishing a traffic stop when a truck passed him, traveling over 100 miles per hour. He pursued the vehicle and pulled the vehicle over. The suspect, who was AWOL from the U.S. Navy and driving a stolen vehicle, opened fire with a .32 caliber handgun as Patrolman Long approached the vehicle, knocking him to the ground. The suspect then took Patrolman Long's service weapon and shot him in the back six times as he lay on the ground.
\n
\nA citizen, who was an avid deer hunter returning from a hunting trip, was stopped at a rest stop 150 yards from the traffic stop and witnessed the shooting. The man immediately retrieved his hunting rifle and shot the suspect at a range of 150 yards, killing him.
\n
\nPatrolman Long had served with the Texas Highway Patrol for 18 years and was stationed at McCamey. I recall some of my mothers tales of living in McCamey and since we moved over to Midland a few years later, before I started school, I do not have any recollections of actually living there. However many years later in early March 1976 I was coming home to Houston Tx and I planned my return to come through McCamey as I wanted to go by the Hospital to see where I was born. I happened to stop at a highway intersection and Officer Long was also stopped and I asked him directions to the hospital. He asked me if I had an emergency and I told him that was not the case, but I only wanted to go by to see the place I was born. I remember him to be very courteous and very helpful and probably thought me to be strange just wanting to see the hospital. Anyway, after I returned home, I told my mother about going through McCamey and I told her Officer Long's name. Well sadly enough the following November she was reading the news and came across the story about Officer Long's tragic death and I have always remembered him and the chance meeting I had that day. I have always respected our DPS Troopers and have had a few traffic stops by them over the years and have always found them all to be very polite and courteous. This was always appreciated as they usually just issued a warning and asked me to slow down and be safe.\n\nYears later after I retired, my wife and I moved to Huntsville, Tx. and she was very fortunate to have the opportunity to go to work for the local Texas Ranger Lieutenant here as an adm. assistant and we have been able to become friends with all the Rangers in Company A and other companies. Yesterday while attending a pre-Christmas Party with some of the Co. A Rangers, her boss gave me a book \"Working on the Border, A Texas Ranger's Tale\", with all the signatures of the current active Rangers in Texas. Well nedless to say, the author, a retired Ranger, Doyle Holdridge, also grew up in Rankin Tx. and had some very fond recollections of Sammy Long, since he was the DPS Trooper in that part of Texas. It seems that Officer Long was the type of man that took care of business, but went a long way to keep young boys growing up in Rankin and McCamey on the straight and narrow. I always ask the Rangers I have met in the past several years if they knew Sammy Long back then and every one of them either knew him or knew who he was. I think that says volumes about the DPS Trooper that I was only able to meet for just a very brief moment in the last year of his life.\n\nSo as we approach this Christmas Season of 2011, I feel very honored to have met you Officer Long, may you rest in peace and I know all of us still here on earth will look forward to meeting you again in heaven and I think you will probably be the Trooper that will once again give me some good and wholesome instruction how to find my way to heaven since you showed me where I started out.
