"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Cpl Bell, as I browse through the history page of officer's who paid the ultimate sacrifice on today's date, I find you, a brother Delaware State Trooper. Though it's 13 years today you left us, you're still here with us, for a true hero never dies. Thank you for your dedication and service. Cpl/1 Steven Rizzo

Even though you died over a decade ago, it's never too
late to pay our respects. Aids is such a devastating
disease and I'm so sorry it claimed your life. What a
shame a person with the disease would donate blood
only to infect innocent people. You gave your life in
public service and no amount of time will diminish your
sacrifice. Thank you. So sad you never got to enjoy the retirement you so richly deserved.

as chris so sadly shares this web-page with robert, i am making it a priority to go over how each of our beloved state troopers have passed...while i have met so many people, including some of robert's family members, i really haven't known the extent to your loss...i have to admit, i was shocked when i read cpl. bell's bio. page...i really had no idea how cpl. bell had passed...how tragic for robert to contact such a "hateful" disease in a very preventable manner...please except our deepest condolences on the loss of robert...

To the family and friends of Corporal Robert BellShawn and officers of the Delaware Sate Police:
On behalf of our entire family, we wish to extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Corporal Bell so tragically died twelve years ago. On this anniversary date of his death, I wanted to say that he is not forgotten, but still honored and revered.
May you all be comforted by the warm embrace of the circle of love and support from the law enforcement community, and other police survivors.
Our family shares your agony as we lost our beloved Larry Lasater of the Pittsburg, Ca Police Dept. when he was fatally shot during a foot pursuit of two bank robbers. We grieve for you and with you.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the twenty two years of dedicated service Robert gave to his community and the citizens of Delaware, and the supreme sacrifice which he and his family made on September 7, 1993.
