"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Ascension

And if I go
while you are still here...
Know that I live on,
vibrating to a different measure
- behind a veil you cannot see through.
You will not see me
so you must have faith.
I wait for the time when we can soar together again,
-both aware of each other.
Until then, live your life to its fullest.
And when you need me,
Just whisper my name in your heart,
........I will be there.

Thank you for your service Trooper Morris.May Our Lord Bless you and your family.

Dicky...I never knew you, but I grew up with your little brother. He is so proud of you, and I know you would be so proud of him. Your influence (however short it was) can be seen in him. I think your brother Chuck considers me one of his best friends. I wish I could also have had you as my friend.
Thank you for your service to our state,
Calvin Jackson

I was thinking about you today, the 23rd. anniversary of your death. But it wasn't your death I was thinking about, it was your life. You were a good man Dicky. You were a good brother. You were a good Trooper. I've got so many memories that I will cherish forever. You were always good to me. I know you loved me. I hope you knew I loved you too. I wish you could be here now. You've got a lot of neices and nephews you never met. I don't talk about you to them as much as I should. I'm sorry about that. I don't visit your grave either. It's just too hard. I'm sorry about that too. But I know you are not there. I take comfort in knowing that you were a good Christian man. I'm thankful that JESUS saved me too because I know I'll be seeing you again soon. I look forward to that. I was devasted when you died, we all were. But many years have passed and memories of you bring smiles instead of tears, thank God. But today I can't help but grieve again. I'm 46 years old now. You were only 28 when you went home. But to me, you will always be my big brother.

I Love You Dicky. Give JESUS a hug, will you? And put in a good word for me. Your aggravating "little" brother, Chuck.
