"Bud" McCloud..many, many years before most people had heard of the Internet, you worked with Deputy Ken McLeod creating a computer crime investigation unit of the MCSO. The MCSO was one of the first, if not THE first, law enforcement agencies to have an online presence - you and Deputy McLeod helped run the MCSO Bulletin Board System, which was open to the public, accessed through dial-up phone lines, and helped facilitate online communications between the MCSO, the public, and other agencies. You helped pioneer something that was ten years ahead of its time, and from what I understand it wasn't even part of your delegated duties - although the MCSO BBS was run on MCSO equipment, it's my understanding that you had to fit your BBS administration duties into your patrol schedule.

And, even some of the people you arrested for computer crimes said that you were "a good cop". You saw the future of law enforcement, and you saw how important computers were going to be, and you advanced the interests of your agency by becoming a pioneer. I thank you for your contributions.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

(From a Policeman's Prayer) "...And when we lay down our night sticks, enroll us in your Heavenly Force, where we will be as proud to guard the throne of God, as we have been to guard the city of men."

21 long years have passed. I didn't know you Darrell, but one upon a time shared your badge. You are not forgotten, and always celebrated. God Bless.

I am proud to be able to say that my Dad was a law enforcement officer for 20 years. He was not the kind of "cop" to brag about what he did for a living, however, he was very proud of the career he chose. He was a very loving husband and father and was well respected by his peers and friends alike. He is missed by many every day but we know that we will be together again.

My brother "Bud" was probably the kindest, most caring law enforcement officer that I ever knew. As a Christian, his heart went out to his fellow men. I used to listen to stories that he told about some of his encounters and how he tried to help people that truly needed it. He and I grew much closer the older we got and became good friends, not just brothers. I used to be able to call him and ask his advice on most any matter and he would guide me with his wisdom. It took many years to come to the final realization that I could no longer just pick up the phone and call him anymore. He is still dearly missed by family and many friends. I look forward to seeing him again some day in heaven.
