I have been visiting this site almost everyday for the last 10 years and each time I think of my friends I have lost. Gonzo is at the top of that list, as we went through the academy together. We have lost others from our class and none will be forgotten. I cleary remember the day Gonzo passed and remember the state of shock and disbelief as I heard the news and attended the funeral. That carries on today and I can not beleive it has been 14 years.
More important than the job we have done is our families for whom we do the job. To Gonzo's wife, I want you to know you and your children were always on Eduardo's mind, in his thoughts and words. There was never a time we spoke in which he did not have something to say about you. His love for you and your children was clearly evident. There was always a smile on his face when he spoke of your family and he made it clear he was becoming a deputy for you. Time will never heal your wounds but I wanted you to know you are not alone. I apologize because I have wanted to leave this reflection for you for 14 years and for some unknown reason never did.
The police academy binds a class of souls together for life. Gonzo and I went to diffrent areas of the valley after graduation and I did not see much of him after that, but he and your family will always be on my mind and in my thoughts and prayers.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Every time I stand at the footsteps of the Madison Street Jail I remember all of the good times I spent working with a great bunch of Officers. You always stood out above the rest. We would spend the evenings getting down to business and then when it was pot luck day we would always count on you to provide one of your spectular mexican dishes!! I remember the day you passed on just like if it were yesterday. May you rest with the angeles. Lt. Evie Nunez

I knew you "Gonzo" as a friend a co-worker. I think of you often and remember our talks before you became a deputy. Being a cop was your life long dream and I know that when you were on patrol, you were truly happy. You will be remembered and missed my friend.

I did not know Deputy Gonzales well but I do remember the friendly face that was more than willing to help a new deputy while investigating a DUI. At that point in time being a "Rookie" you did not get that much friendly help but Deputy Gonzales treated me like I had been on for years and even though he had just met me he acted as if we were old friends.
I just want to extend my best wisheds to his family, God Bless
