Pat was my best friend in High School. He was the happiest kid I knew .His family were down to earth nice folks. You could always tell his sister "Boo"loved him with all her heart. We saw each other occassinally as the years went by.You could tell he was a man with purpose and conviction.
Now 19 years have gone by since his passing.I think of him fondly and remember the good times we had together and cherish these memories as some of the happiest I've ever known,or ever will.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 19th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

Rest In Peace.

Patrick,
Today we attended the unveiling of your memorial plackard at the site of your unfortunate accident.

We were honored to have been asked to represent your family at this event. We told everyone what a great "ring bearer" you were at our wedding, what a fantastic young man you were, and what a fabulous officer you had been.

We met the family of officer Wayne Scott, wonderful people, who had the same heart break as we did when Wayne met the same fate as you did, at the same location twelve years later than you. Wayne's memorial plackard was unveiled at the same time as yours.

You and Wayne are both highly respected, loved, admired, and truly missed.

Rest in peace

Pat was my Recruit Training Officer in the academy in 1990. Shortly after graduation, I saw Pat on the street riding his motor. He acted like it would not start so he asked me for a push start. Being a brand new Officer in training, there I was in the middle of summer, in Phoenix, with all my gear on, pushing Pat on his motorcycle down the middle of the street. I pushed and pushed but he never let the clutch out to start it. Pat then looked back at me after about a block or two, laughed and started the motorcycle and flew off down the street. I was obviously duped. That is one of the things I miss the most, Pat's sense of humor. Rest in peace my brother. Till we meet again in heaven.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.

Today, June 20, 2004 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Police Officer Patrick O. Briggs who died in the line of duty on this date fourteen years ago.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

Officer Briggs' sacrifice will never be forgotten.
