Deputy Sheriff Lutz,

The sacrifice you made so long ago for the people of Riverside County has not been forgotten. Today, I honor your service. I will never forget. Rest easy, brother.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 20th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

In reading the loving reflections, I see that you are missed and loved by many and that you had a profound impact on the lives of others. I hold your family and friends in my heart's embrace today.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Randy, I remember when you first joined San Jacinto Police Department, you were always a positive person to be around. Then one day i see you on patrol in a Riverside County Sheriffs Unit, you always had such a big smile, you helped me through something i had been dealing with for years, i thank you for taking the time to talk with me, and sharing your perspective on things.

I read the last note left by one of your ex- Explorers, i think he summs up how people felt about you. you always had time for others. I remember the last time i saw you, you were in a Black and white at 14th and lime street in Riverside, you had just put your "Motor Wings " on your uniform shirt, ill never forget the smile on your face, it almost equaled the smile on a new fathers face .

I was working the day of your Accident, i heard the radio traffic, my heart dropped when i heard it when dispatch tried to dispatch you to the accident, when at that time they didnt now it was you involved, i remember Joe Horton at the Mo Val station Crying at the station when he told us you didnt make it. You will live forever Randy, your a man of Honor and you are missed.

Randy...Its been 12 years now since that fatal day. I couldn't believe the news when they called me. We were your explorer scouts and we just had seen you the night before. I will never forget how proud you were on your shiny new motorcycle making history in Riverside County. I will never forget the values and integrity you taught us. I will never forget the sacrafice you made. I will never forget the funeral. You were like a father to me, and you were my hero. I strived to be like you, and I think you would be proud of all of us. We all have gone on to become Officers. Sadly, as you know, Doug Jacobs, who you knew as a young explorer 12 years ago, was recently shot and killed on the streets of Riverside answering a disturbance call. The same streets we walked as young explorer scouts. His funeral was all too familiar and was held at the same place as yours, where we attended together in 1989. Its ironic how life works sometimes, but we go on day by day. I hope you and Doug watch over me and guide me on the job. I'll never forget you my hero....Thank You so much
