As my career's end is coming closer, I decided to check and find those who had lost their lives during the year that I was hired. While it's been many years since your passing, I'm sure those you left behind and those whom with you served with distinction have kept you alive in their memories. Thank you for your service and for looking out for us who continue in our chosen profession. Rest in peace Deputy Lewis.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Mike and I both graduated from Northern Arizona Univerity and began working for Mohave County Sheriffs Department. We were best friends and enjoyed hunting and fishing during our off duty times.Mike was a fine officer and I could not have ask for a better officer to have as back up.I was on my first day of vacation when Mike was killed at a lonely gas station near the Arizona and California border.I lost a true friend a man who was a wonderful husband and had he lived I'm sure a terrific father. There is not a day goes by that I don't think of my old friend James Michael Lewis.

My deceased husband was a very dedicated officer who was nick-named "the wizard" for his amazing police work. He had a real passion for making our world a safer place for people. He was also a wonderful loving husband and father. Those who knew him remember his great sense of humor and loyal spirit to his family and friends. He was fair, honest and brave. He also had a gentle and compassionate way with people. He seemed to be able to know if an individual did something more like a mistake or a willful breaking of the law. He truly understood the "letter of the law" as well the "spirit of the law". We will never forget him and the great work he did.

I never had a chance to meet my father; he was killed when I was only a few months old. I didn’t know this site existed until I did a Google search on his name. This is a great way to remember what sacrifices officers and their families make everyday.
My mother and I still live in Arizona and a Scholorship has been set up in my fathers name for Criminal Justice majors at NAU by my Gandmother.
