Your heroism and service is honored today, the 20th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

Today March 31, 2009 marks 20 years, Gil's memory still lives and as we look back to that cold snowy Friday so many years ago, today seemed so far away, now that it is here, it seems like yesteday we were there in the cold.
To Louise and Katie, and all the family,you are in my thoughts and prayers today, and to all the members of the Maine state Police, you are also in my prayers, for your safety and continued dedication to public safety in these dangerous days. I hope you all know that we will never forget Gil or the job all law enforcement officers do each and everey day.

The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

To Gil & members of the Landry Family:

As we remember today, the 18th anniversary , please know that you will live forever in our memories and in our prayers. As the years go by there are fewer and fewer pleople that remember that day becasue most were not in law enforcement at the time and that day is history to them. Those of us who were there in Leeds that cold, snowy Friday morning in March will never forget. Gil, you must have been watching over your fellow officers yesterday in Auburn, as no one was killed in our law enforcement family.

Louise - please know we still all care and remember Gil and his family.

As I remember that terrible day 18 years ago today, I found it ironic to read the story of what happened in Auburn last night. All of your Brothers made it home safe in the end.

I see that someone has updated your picture here on the website. It seems better and more fitting than your academy picture.

I'll be checking on your name on The Wall in DC in a month and a half.

Detective Landry, I recall your memorial service, which I attended as a member of the HUPD Honor Guard. I recall how full the ice rink was and how cold the ice surface was through the Astroturf laid down for us to walk on. It seemed so appropriate. Despite it being April, there was plenty of snow at the cemetery. The sadness exhibited by all who knew and loved you was felt by us all, even those of us who had never had the honor of meeting you.

Seventeen years later, that sadness is no doubt still with all those you left behind. I know you never truly left them and they know it even better.

I remember that fateful day as if it were yesterday. I had just retired and vividly recall the spine chilling news and the urge to respond, to try to make things right for my fellow trooper. It was not to be. Giles, you made the ultimate sacrifice and are a true hero. You will never be forgotton.

I remember Giles as being a quiet Little Guy...Liked by all ...revered by all who knew him...I was working out of Headquarters at the time he was brutally cut down....We felt Giles was totally taking it one his self to protect a needy family....

Now he is no more, but never forgotten

Detective Giles Landry was my replacement in the homocide unit when I got promoted and went to the drug unit.He was assigned my old unmarked cruiser and took my radio call number when he went to detectives.I remember him as a very mild mannered gentleman that cared for the public he served.A very soft spoken individual with nothing but the best interest in those he served.I remember the day of the incident very well because a friend of mine who did not know Giles had taken my number heard traffic about the incident and was very concerned for me.
