My mother's family rests in Milton cemetary, just behind Trooper Mattaliano and we visit from CT every year. Each time I park and walk past his grave I cry; I wonder who this officer was and why he died so young. He was my age. Now that I found this memorial, I have a face to go with the name. And next time we visit our loved ones I'll finally know who this brave Trooper was, and how much he was loved by others. God Bless. Dawne Young

"The Badge" He starts his shift each day To respond to calls unknown. He drives a marked patrol car. A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes To make it safe on the streets. But he usually has a second job 'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday 'Cause he works all year round. And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often, The one whos blood runs blue. He seldom ever gets a thanks, To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops 'Cause people just don't understand That underneath his badge and gun, He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow In this world of drugs and crime. And he gets so mad at the court system 'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work, He prays to God above. Please bring me home after my shift So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car, He's alone down this ole' highway. It's just a little traffic infraction. He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window, And his badge is shining bright. He asked the guy for a driver's license, When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark, Striking the officer in the chest. But the Department's budget didn't buy Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding. His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red. And briefly he thought of his loved ones 'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story Of how this officer had died. And some who listened cared less, But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform With his badge pinned on his chest. He even had his revolver, He died doing his best.

James was my uncle. I am 12 years old and was born February 22, 1995 nine hours before he died. I never knew my Uncle Jim, he was my dads brother and even so I miss him like I knew him as much as a know all of my other family. My Uncle Jim was supposed to be my godfather and his wife, my godmother. My aunt is still my godmother and I love her but my Uncle had to be replaced by my pupa(grandfather) a former Milton Cop. I miss and love my uncle even though I have never seen him and I know that all of my family feel the same and wish him to rest in piece and relax as time goes by.
I Love You -L.Mattaliano L. Mattaliano Niece 2007-07-20

I now live in Sanford FL but lived in Boston when we lost these two brave men. I still have the T-shirt dedicated to them and wear it to remind people how fragile life is and how these men put their lives on the line for us every day. In Florida we have people that do foolish things that jeapordize our safety personnel such as going out in hurricanes and windsurfing during them. If not for the people's own safety they should care that the men that try to save them might lose their own lives for the stupidity of others.
Although this has been awhile I wanted to write and remind people to never forget just as we will never forget 9-11. I lost my Dad a Firefighter and as your website states, it is not the agency but the whole nation that suffers a loss. God bless the families, friends and of course co-workers of Trooper Mattaliano and Perry. I am married to a Pilot who flies fixed and rotor so I am reminded each time he flies that I should never let him leave home without a kiss and I love you. Let people know you appreciate them while you are lucky enough to be able to.
