I just came upon this page and can't believe its been 12yrs. My brother Randy Martinez was good friends with Steve, I dont think I ever really knew his real name because we called him by his nickname (I wont say it). My brother and Steve kind of grew up together they went to the same schools and remember Steve being on the wrestling team with my brother. He often went with us on family outings. He was a great guy. Rachelle Bates Avondale PD/Friend 2008-02-05

"The Badge" He starts his shift each day To respond to calls unknown. He drives a marked patrol car. A police officer he is known. He's paid by the citizens' taxes To make it safe on the streets. But he usually has a second job 'Cause a waitress has his salary beat. Now he doesn't know a holiday 'Cause he works all year round. And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive At his home he cannot be found. He's cursed and assaulted often, The one whos blood runs blue. He seldom ever gets a thanks, To some he's just a fool. His friends are always other cops 'Cause people just don't understand That underneath his badge and gun, He's just another man. He knows there might not be a tomorrow In this world of drugs and crime. And he gets so mad at the court system 'Cause the crooks don't get any time. And each day when he leaves for work, He prays to God above. Please bring me home after my shift So I can see the ones I love. But tonight he stops a speeding car, He's alone down this ole' highway. It's just a little traffic infraction. He does it everyday. Well, he walks up to the driver's window, And his badge is shining bright. He asked the guy for a driver's license, When a shot rang through the night. Yes, the bullet hit its mark, Striking the officer in the chest. But the Department's budget didn't buy Each officer a bullet-proof vest. So he lay on the ground bleeding. His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red. And briefly he thought of his loved ones 'Cause in a moment the officer was dead. In the news they told the story Of how this officer had died. And some who listened cared less, But those who loved him cried. Well, they buried him in uniform With his badge pinned on his chest. He even had his revolver, He died doing his best. Brother Pollard,
May the road rise up to meet you, May the wind be always at your back, May the sun shine warm upon your face, And the rains fall soft upon your fields, And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

I have just stumbled upon this page and I just wanted to leave a reflection on the awesome person that Stevie was. He was taken from our family way to young. In our family all of us cousins grew up together, we were all more like brothers and sisters than cousins and he was definitely a very protective big brother. He was older than me so I knew he would always be my protector. He was the best cousin any of us could have asked for. I miss him terribly, this month it will be 11 years since he was take from us. It seems like just yesterday that he was coming to our family gatherings and everyone laugh. Stevie was one in a million and I know that he watches down on all of those who take on the brave job of keeping our world safe. Alicia Hegstrom Cousin of Stevie 2005-11-06
Steve,
I wish I would have had the opportinuty to know Officer Pollard. I am reminded everyday of the sacrafice he made. Steve was the first and only Mesa Police Officer to give his life in the line of duty. Steve had been gone nearly five years when I entered the academy, but I felt his presence immediately. His picture is displayed at our stations as a reminder of how he was taken from us. I'm sure I speak for every Mesa Officer in saying that we know Steve is till with us. Steve, there has been so many times when I've advised on a call, looked over and saw you standing next to me with a smile on your face. You are an inspiration to me, and I hope that you are proud of the officers that continue to serve here without you. Watch over us Steve, and know that we will never forget you. Officer Jody McInnis Mesa Police Department, AZ
I knew Steve when I was a Circle K clerk on the graveyard shift at Val Vista and Broadway in Mesa. Steve would do a nightly security check on me. We had talked about my interest in Law Enforcement and maybe applying for Mesa PD. I never did apply with Mesa PD but, he did have an influence on me. I have been with the Pinal County Sheriff's Office for almost 6 years now. I have been dispatching for almost 4 of those years. Steve was a wonderful and caring man. I will never forget him. Comm. Spec. Angelique Graham Pinal County Sheriff's Office
