 | Auxiliary Police Officer Milton S. Clarke New York City Police Department - Auxiliary Police Section New York Wednesday, December 1, 1993 |
Ofc.Clarke I never had the chance or privledge of working with you.I started my law enforcement career in 1993. I was not working as hard as you in the NYPD, we had the same duties, some of the same dangers but nothing what you guys in the NYPD face patrolling the beat without a gun. You showed courage in your last day with us when your watch ended. You were selfless and giving of your self like all of us who have donned the uniform to make our communities a safer place and help the full time PO's out on patrol. We have a love of law enforcement so much that we give of ourselves for free and many hours of our personal time.
We don't get paid to wear the uniform and badge, receive no compensation at all when we walk away from the Auxiliary or Reserve Police Department. People do not understand how we do this with out a gun. Some say we are crazy, we are dedicated to serve the people that is why we do it. I am now a sworn officer in Mia Dade and it is a great feeling. But your sacrafice is not forgotten by your fellow Brother and Sister Aux/Reserve officers. Milton you left us but not forgotten, I am sure you are walking the beat in heaven making sure everything is ok. St. Michael watches over us but god called you back to the heavens. Your watch is over and we will take it from here. Rest In Peace! my brother, and thank you for your service to the people and the NYPD. God Bless your family and friends who miss you. Always your brother Ofc.T.Dolin MDCR Ofc.T.Dolin Miami Dade Corrections Dept/Former NCPDAux PO/Malverne Reserve PO 2009-09-29

I just discovered my father's family via the internet only this past week after near forty years. The first story I came upon was one of his death. I was sad and disappointed to know that he had been killed. May the Lord bless, guide and keep the family he was close to and ease all our hearts that thoughts of Him may bring joy to our hearts and smiles to our faces. Rest in peace. Amen. "The Badge"
He starts his shift each day To respond to calls unknown. He drives a marked patrol car. A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes To make it safe on the streets. But he usually has a second job 'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday 'Cause he works all year round. And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often, The one whos blood runs blue. He seldom ever gets a thanks, To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops 'Cause people just don't understand That underneath his badge and gun, He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow In this world of drugs and crime. And he gets so mad at the court system 'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work, He prays to God above. Please bring me home after my shift So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car, He's alone down this ole' highway. It's just a little traffic infraction. He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window, And his badge is shining bright. He asked the guy for a driver's license, When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark, Striking the officer in the chest. But the Department's budget didn't buy Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding. His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red. And briefly he thought of his loved ones 'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story Of how this officer had died. And some who listened cared less, But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform With his badge pinned on his chest. He even had his revolver, He died doing his best.

I am one of the many nieces Milton had. I was only a child when this happened but remember it like it was yesterday. My uncle was a great man who lived to sacrifice and help others.
Our family continues to salute him daily and will always keep his memory alive.

As a former auxiliary cop, I salute you and your family. As a a police officer now I can tell you there is very little difference between auxiliaries and sworn police officers. A true cop is determined by actions not a mere title. You and your family earned it. Rest in peace, brother. PO Raymond L Fuentes NYS MTAPD 2006-11-09
Officer Clarke, thank you for your service. Continue to watch over and protect your family and your family in blue.
To those that told his daughter he was "just and auxiliary police officer", you should be ashamed of yourselves. A police officer is a police officer, no matter what.
To the children of Officer Clarke - hold your heads high and know that your Father was, and is, a hero! Michelle - wife of Retired LEO

I never thought my fahter's death would mean anything to anybody...After all he was just an auxiliary officer. I thought very much of it. But I didnt think others would. But today I came here after doing a google search and I found this. I am so elated. What a thoughtful thing to do.
I tried getting a scholarship for the offspring of killed police officers but got rejected and they said to me "he was just an auxiliary cop" and I said to them "JUST an auxiliary cop? He died to help others. where is the honor in that?" So after that I didnt think anyone cared. But I see that they do and that makes me happy. Kassie Edwards | Student Daughter of Milton 2006-07-07
Aux Officer Clarke, You laid down your life for your fellow officers and the citizens of NY city. As an auxiliary officer, I look up to you with great respect for engaging an armed man all while you were unarmed. I hope there is a special place in everyones heart for a person like you. Thank You. Auxiliary Police Officer Greg Gadt Bedford Police Dept (near Cleveland) 2006-04-25
I can still recall first coming into "The Program" way back in the early seventies. We had just suffered the loss of our first "Officer Down" in the Central Park Precinct. I was in the 2-0 back then, but eventually found my way to the 5-2. We are all saddened by the loss of any of our Brotherhood. But we have all been enriched by the knowing of and the closeness to each and every other of our "Brothers and Sisters in Blue". May A/PO Clarke, and all those of us nearer to God, find safety in His arms, and guard and guide us all from Heaven, where those of us who Keep the Faith as Auxiliaries here on Earth guard and guide in our own neighborhoods. Requiescat in Paces, Custodiet. ex-A/Sgt NYPD Auxiliary Forces Section 2006-03-30
Rest in peace brother Clarke. Auxiliary Police Officer F.P NY Auxiliary Police 2006-02-12
I can still remember that night I arrived at the precinct and was expecting you to come in for your regular tour of duty. You can't imagine how devestated I was when I heard that you had been shot and killed earlier that day, but when I learned of the circumstances I knew that you would not have thought of doing any less.
Those of us who knew you miss you and I would like to dedicate this poem to you.
The policeman stood and faced God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining, Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman. How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To my church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No lord, I guess I ain't, Because those of us who carry a badge can't always be a saint."
I've had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough, and sometimes I've been violent, Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny, That wasn't mine to keep Though I worked a lot of overtime When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help, Though at time I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place Among the people here. They never wanted me around Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord, It needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don't I'll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne Where the saints had often trod. As the policeman waited quietly, For the judgement of his god.
"Step forward now, policeman, You've born your burdens well. Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets, You've done your time in hell"
