I saw an old episode of Real Stories of the Highway Patrol today and they talked about your tragic murder. I felt like I had to leave this reflection. It saddened me because the day you were tragically taken from us all, I celebrated a birthday. I learned you were a sergeant in the Army, like myself. I pray time has brought peace to your family and co-workers since this incident occurred. God bless all those who mourn your passing. I pray the man who committed this act gets the justice he deserves....

Carlos:

Thanksgiving we conducted a prisoner transport and I loaned you my transport belt... The next day you returned it to me over coffee at Burns Brothers... Little did I know that I would place the same belt on your murder only a week later...

It was an honor to work with you, your service to your country in Desert Storm as well as your service to Nevada will never be forgotten as long as the rest of us carry fond memories of you...

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

IN HONOR AND MEMORY OF STATE TROOPERS EVERYWHERE KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY....Trooper Borland on that Cold winter day in december whenever most people hated to be outside in the cold...you were making traffic stops and handling calls..to service the public...if that itself isnt a hero i dont know what is..but yet you paid the ultimate price of being a Trooper........being killed in the line of duty...now you are in heaven rejoicing with all of the other state troopers across america... walking the street of gold probably drinking beer with with the big guy,,,,,,,,,RIP

I think of you often, and for no particular reason. Maybe it's the way the clouds are moving across the sky or a breeze that comes from nowhere. You lived what you loved and did it in a most honorable way. Each year, on my birthday (nov 30)we say a little prayer to honor you, your folks and Carmen. Trooper Borland,

I was watching "Real Stories of the Highway Patrol" on cable TV and your story was told.

Traffic Stops and Domestic's are the number one fatal injuries to Law Enforcement Officers by (National Law Enforcement Statistics). That tragic day you answered a low risk call that turned deadly. Later on that evening they apprehended your killer. Little beknown at the time he was wanted for numerous crimes all through the country. You are truly an American HERO...... Maybe one day technology will be better than it is now, and will provide Law Enforcement Officers with information that you didn't have at the time, and MAYBE just MAYBE the outcome might had been different.

Thank you for your dedicated and loyal service to the citizens of the State Of Nevada...... Rest Easy BROTHER and please watch over us who continue to serve.

P.S. Your funeral service was beautiful, I only wish I could have been there for you my BROTHER Trooper Borland.

Trooper Borland, thank you for your service to this beautiful state. I was getting ready to start the police academy when we lost you and there were many kind words spoken from many different state agencies at that time. Your watch is over, rest at peace my brother and know you will not be forgotten. It has been almost 12 years and I have not although we never met.

Carlos had a handwritten Hemingway quote that was pinned to the wall above his desk. I have a copy of it in my house and in my office.
If the people bring so much courage to this world, the world has to kill them to break them.
So, of course it kills them, it kills the very good, the very gentle, and the very brave impartially.
It is a quote from Farewell to Arms and is surreal. Thank you Carlos, my guardian angel, I miss you my friend and we'll see each other someday.
