You have not been forgotten. The honorary sign for the individual from the group that took your life and that of your partner never came about in the City. Many people fought this idea and won the fight. Continue to keep watch over your loved ones and those still on patrol in the City.

Dear Uncle John,

We have missed having you in our lives. This week has been difficult as the City Council has been discussing the street sign legislation. Be assured that we are writing letters and doing all we can to block that from happening. Your brother and sister, neices and nephews, relatives and friends always remember you. The Chicago Police Department stands by you.

Dear Uncle Johnny,

Your family, friends and loyal coworkers from the Chicago Police Department will do everything we can to persuade the Chicago City Council to reject the honorary street name for the former chairman of the Black Panthers. It’s a sad day for the City of Chicago that this proposal is even being considered. Please know that you are always in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear John:
A few months prior to your death, we were asked by your sister, Pat, and my brother, Gary, to be godparents for their firstborn daughter, Christine. Over the years, the births of your nephews, Gary and Brian, followed and I have been blessed to share more joyful experiences and participate in celebrations with your family. I only wish that you were able to experience those same joys with me. I know that you would be proud to see the wonderful caring adults that they have become. Your loss has been a huge void and your memory has been carried in our hearts.

It is with great pride and great sadness that I write these words. Officer John Gilhooly is the uncle that I never had the opportunity to meet due to his untimely death. I was not alive when he was killed, but now 37 years later I see the pain inflicted on the family firsthand on account of Chicago City Councilwoman Madeline Haithcock’s sponsored ordinance to name a city street "in honor" of a former chairman of the Black Panthers. I thank all of those on this board that have committed to fighting this proposal.

When will the hatred end? I was seven months old almost to the day that you were taken. The hatred is still in the world. When will people realize?

I am so sorry that your family had to endure such a horrible tragedy. How awful that must have been.

You sir are a hero. Rest Easy.

Officer Gilhooly, you have not been forgotten. The City of Chicago has the Alderwoman from the west side attempting to have a street name honoring a leader of the Black Panthers. I find this unacceptable and I will fight this proposal but you know how Chicago politics can be. What type of individual is this that they want children to look up to as a role model. You are the HERO. You will never be forgotten.

P.O. Gilhooly, even as we in the Chicago P.D. are undercut at every turn by the pandering and incompetence of city officials, we continue the struggle to gain control of the streets. Please watch over us and know that you are not forgotten.

The following is a letter sent to Chicago City Councilwoman Madeline Haithcock who has sponsored an ordinance to name a city street "in honor" of a former chairman of the Black Panthers who advocated murdering police officers.

************************************************************************

King County, in Seattle Washington just announced today that they will adorn all county seals, flags, papers, patches and badges with the image of Martin Luther King... I personally am proud to wear the image of my childhood "HERO" on my uniform and badge.

I am however shocked and appauled that you sponsored an ordinance to name a city street "in honor" of a former chairman of the Black Panthers who advocated murdering police officers. Members of the radical group were responsbible for the murders of 5 law enforcement officers, including 2 Chicago officers during his chairmanship.

I can think of the families of the murdered officers (Frank Rappaport ~ John Gilhooly ~ Glenn Smith ~ Kenneth Patrick ~ Ricky Kinchen), and how horrified they might feel to see this supposed honor. Please think of "all" involved before moving on with this idea.
