I remember the accident very well from all the news reports and I ALWAYS say a prayer for Trooper Fry as I pass over Monument hill on my commute to work at DIA from Colo Spgs. I have always wondered why his flowers were removed from the lightpole at the scene and why a memorial was never placed there.
I pray his family is well.
God Bless!

While I was only 10 years old in Alamosa, Charlie was a true role model and a inspiration for my career path. I will always regret seeing a trooper named Fry bring in a prisoner to the El Paso County Jail and I failed to say hello because I thought there would be another day. Thanks Charlie for everything.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I worked with Charles on the Alamosa Police Department from 1972 to 1975. He was always knowlegable and consistant in his job performance. I learned a lot from his tutelage when I was a rookie. I often remember the good times we had working on the APD and the joy of doing a job that was exciting and challenging. I send my condolances to his wife and family. Charles will be missed by all who knew him.

Drew-
There is no greater gift than a man that lays down his life for that of another. You are a hero and an inspiration for all those that dare to wear the "Badge".

I had the honor of working with Charlie in north eastern Colorado in the late 70's. I've tried to emulate him in my career in law enforcement because of his personal and professional ethics. I know that Charlie is missed my all who knew him. He took his commitment to protect the public he served seriously. I knew that if the situation arose, he would give his life for another without a second thought. Unfortunately, it was a senseless and tragic event that took him from us. I will always keep Charlie alive in my heart and thoughts.
Peace my friend.

To the widow and the children of Trooper Fry,
I am deeply hurt to hear of Andrews death. I was only 6 years old when he was killed. I want your family to know I will keep you all in my prayers. I am more disgusted at the fact that the man that should still be behind bars for his death is out and will probably kill someone else. When will we learn?
May god be with the fry family
