Your heroism and service is honored today, the 42nd anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

Two days a memorial was held for your four brothers from Oakland. Our community is mourning their loss that happened on the darkest day in OPD history.

Thnak you for your ultimate sacrifice protecting the law abiding citizens of Oakland from the criminals and terrorists of the day. I remember that awful day in October very well. I was a junior high school student in Oakland at the time. My dad was Assistant Fire Chief for the Oakland Fire Department and we had a lot of family friends and relatives in the OPD. I still remember quite vividly right at the time of your sacrifice, we had two Oakland Police Officers at our school for a "Know Your Police" program, I still remember their names, Officer Del Kraft and Officer Joe Tomatis. We had to do a project on an example of crime from the Oakland Tribune and write about it. I used your incident to write about. I remember all the fallout afterward and the trial of your assailant.
He got off with a wrist slap, but cosmic justice prevailed and he finally received justice years later, several blocks from where you were shot. I decided to become a law enforcement officer right about the time of your sacrifice, and have been so for 33 years..not retired yet. God Bless you and again, thank you for your ultimate sacrifice.

My father was also killed in the line of duty on June 19,1970. I was five and my sister was seven. She is also named Kimberly. I know all to well of your pain. We have been sentenced to life without our fathers. That's alot more harsh then most of these cop killers get. I know your father and mine are up in heaven watching over us. The following is a letter sent to Chicago City Councilwoman Madeline Haithcock who has sponsored an ordinance to name a city street "in honor" of a former chairman of the Black Panthers who advocated murdering police officers.

King County, in Seattle Washington just announced today that they will adorn all county seals, flags, papers, patches and badges with the image of Martin Luther King... I personally am proud to wear the image of my childhood "HERO" on my uniform and badge.

I am however shocked and appauled that you sponsored an ordinance to name a city street "in honor" of a former chairman of the Black Panthers who advocated murdering police officers. Members of the radical group were responsbible for the murders of 5 law enforcement officers, including 2 Chicago officers during his chairmanship.

I can think of the families of the murdered officers (Frank Rappaport ~ John Gilhooly ~ Glenn Smith ~ Kenneth Patrick ~ Ricky Kinchen), and how horrified they might feel to see this supposed honor. Please think of "all" involved before moving on with this idea.

You have not been forgotten Officer Frey. I salute you for your dedicated service and heroism. I have become involved in voicing my personal opinion reference naming a street after a Black Panther who was an advocate of violence in Chicago. I have been in touch with other Chicago Aldermen and a city newspaper to advise them that this is not the type of role model that children should be looking up to as a hero. Officer Frey, you are the HERO. You will never be forgotten.

John Frey was a good man who was just starting out in the career field. I spoke to him before shift the night he died. John's at peace, his assailant is not in the same place John is now.
Rest knowing we did all we could.
