Though I never knew him, the memory of this tragedy will remain with me the rest of my life. My heart aches for each officer lost through the years and my only comfort is knowing that true justice lies with God. He will take care of it. I have been in law enforcement over 30 years, and the death of any of my law enforcement family never gets any easier. I wish I had known each of them, but look forward to embracing them all in heaven one day. See you then, Walter!

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Walter was a good friend of mine when I lived in Waterbury, Ct. I knew him for several years growing up. There is never a day that goes by that I don't think of Walter. I still have a memorial sweat shirt when Walter passed. You were a great friend Walter, and I will never, ever FORGET you. It's still sad to me why someone would take your life away, when you worked everyday protecting the ones you loved and even the ones you didn't know. I'm also very angry that your son never got to meet you, as he was just 2 weeks of being born. Walter was a caring father, a great friend and an awesome officer. He liked to work alone so he had a nickname of "Robo Cop".
Your in a safe place now buddy, so FEAR NO MORE. My prayers will always be with you Walter and your family. God Bless

I came to this website to let you know you are not forgotten and never will be! You actually shaped my career path at a time when I was lost and did not really know what I wanted in life. I was a 20 year old college student when I heard the news of your death and it broke my heart. I did not understand how such a good man could be taken by animals like. From that day forward I made it my goal to protect people and pursue a career in law enforcement.

I just found out about this site, and think that it a wonderful thing. It has been 13 years since Walter's death, and the boys & I miss him everyday. They have grown up knowing what kind of man their father was...good, kind and loving. Hopefully those traits will continue in each one of them. So far so good. They are good boys.

At the beginning of every shift I supervise, myself and the other officers on shift dedicate the day to the memory of a fallen officer.

Tonight, December 18, 2005 we dedicated the shift to the memory of Officer Walter T. Williams III who died in the line of duty on this date thirteen years ago.

When one law enforcement officer falls, we all stumble for a while, but we will carry on.

Officer Williams' sacrifice will never be forgotten.

I grew up in Waterbury. I remember Walter when I was a kid. He was the neighborhood paperboy. He always had a smile and a kind word. When I grew up and married, my husband was a cop who worked with Walter. Funny thing, Walter hadn't changed. He was now a cop, always with a smile, always with a kind word. "Bad guys" didn't like him though. He had no kind words for them. He dealt with them as an officer of the law is meant to deal with them. The creature who killed him knew that. Now he sits on death row. Although we can no longer see Walter smile nor hear his kind words he and his family are remembered always.

Such a sad ending to a life of sacrifice and service. Thinking of your
loved ones left behind today and wishing God's blessing and comfort on
all those who are still grieving your passing. Life is difficult at times
and the Lord Jesus wants to help carry our burdens. He gives us many
