On todays date, the First Responder Unit of the U.S. Capitol Police honored Officer Groner's service during roll call by reading his entry from ODMP. Each day, we honor one fallen officer on the anniversary of their death so as to keep them in our thoughts, and also to remind us of the dangers inherent in our job.

Mark,
It's hard to believe so many years have passed since you left us. You were such a good friend when we were at Towson State together, and I will not forget the good times we had. You were so full of life and that smile that never left your face are the things I have never forgotten about you. You always wanted to protect those that you cared for and you continued protecting those in need as a Trooper. You are missed more than you may have ever known. Someday I will get the chance to thank you for being a friend, and tell you just how much you did for me.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Hey Mark,
I just wanted to talk to you for a few minutes and tell you how much you are missed. When I heard you were killed I just couldn't believe you were gone. You were always enthusiastic in the academy. I have alot of great memories of you and how much you would push our classmates to be motivated. It's funny how you touched so many lives, I didn't know you were close with Joel. I left state and went to Prince George's County and later worked with Joel.
Well buddy, you always wanted to be a Maryland State Trooper and now you'll always be a Trooper.
Thank you for your service Trooper Groner,

Mark,
This belated and late message is to say goodbye to a very
good person. I knew Mark from the 98th State Police Class. If it were not for Mark, I and I suspect many others in the class would not have passed those difficult days. He was funny and had a contagious smile. Above all, he was very serious about becoming a Maryland State Trooper. While some of us have moved on to other things in life, Mark is and shall always be on patrol for all of us. May God Bless You and your family for their great loss. It is a loss that shall never be forgotten!.

Mark,
you are missed. Everytime I pass that intersection I am reminded of your corney jokes, your contagious smile, and the unfortunate night that your life was cut far short. You were a good friend and I knew that my backup was close by when you were working. The streets that you are patrolling is much better than the hell that I and those that you left behind have to deal with. Someday we will meet again and laugh at all of the funny parts of this job. Until then goodbye my friend.

Mark,

I still remember our friendship, and what a dedicated Trooper you were. I know you are in God's hands now, but you are not forgotten.
