Your heroism and service is honored today, the 27th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Rest In Peace, Skip.

I hold your family in thought and prayer today. Reading your wife's loving reflection, I am reminded that death ends a life, not a relationship. You are loved and missed by so many.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Skip is very much missed even as I approach 24 years since his death. Nothing's has ever been the same.

He was a very serious person and my daughter has taken many of his ways. His son has taken his idealism, honor and service in the Marine's.

He was also funny and cried during sad scenes on the t.v. He was ironically sensitive and tough.

He loved "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy and read it once a year. He said he'd get something different out of it each time. I've never read it but after seeing the movie I can see that he really agreed with Frodo's attitude of sacrificing himself for others' happiness. Without Skip's presence that horrible night - I don't know what would've happened.

I know he did not want to leave ... I know he's watching over us all to see what we're doing each day.

I will always miss Skip.

I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003).

We all grieve over the lives lost in the line of duty. I hope you can find some comfort knowing that there are countless prayers that go out for your family.

These are senseless tragedies that never seem to stop. God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.

I will always remember Skip for his warm smile and his friendly attitude towards everyone. There was one time that he had trouble with his boat up the Tanana River and was stranded. I was waiting at the Chena River landing for my husband, Steve, to come back from his fishing trip somewhere up the river. Steve was a lot later than I felt he should be since it was way beyond dark. I was beginning to get worried as Steve was pretty much a beginning boater on the bigger rivers. FINALLY, I saw a boat light coming and ran outside to meet it ... hoping it was Steve. The first person out of the boat was Skip and he ran over & hugged me and said that it was his fault that Steve was so late as they had towed Skips boat back to the landing.
Skip was a good friend and I really miss him. I will never forget his smile.

I was truly sorry to hear about "Skip" (his nickname in the Army). I had not seen him since I got out of the Army the first time in 1974. We were together at the 56th Military Police Company at Ft. Richardson, AK for about two years. We had some good times hunting, fishing, shooting pool. We had two other former MP friends killed in Anchorage PD (Harry Kier in 1980 and Harry Hanson in 1986). Rest in peace Bro!
