I think about Mr Joe all the time as well. I only knew him for the earlier years of my life but I can remember a kind, warmhearted and playful soul. He had a wonderful family - very close knit and you could tell he loved them very much. Being from a family of law enforcement officers I know what uncertainty they face every day and what kind of courage a man or woman must have to be in that line of work. It's not an easy job- but it is a job for someone with a higher purpose and a strong soul- they are dedicated to protecting their community and the ones they love before they protect themselves. He will always be a hero to me.

Rarely does a day go by that you do not enter my mind. Know one will ever know how special you were to all of us. Dad talks to you often and looks forward to the day you meet again. For all families that have lost their loved ones in the line of duty, it does get easier but NEVER does the love go away or deminish. As we approach the 20 year mark of your passing it ofter feels like it happened yesterday. Always know you are in our thoughts, prayers and that we are proud to have had you in our lives. Love forever, Kim

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

As one who spent more than 24 years wearing a USMC uniform,I have come to place four USN components ahead of the other USN components - No. 4 Navy Chaplains, No. 3 Seabees, No. 2 SEALs, and No. 1 Navy Corpsmen.

May You Rest-In-Peace.

Heroes and the sacrifices they make are never forgotten. Sgt. Broussard, you are a true hero and you are not forgotten.

Although I was never lucky enough to have met you, from what my dear husband has told me, you were one of the better influences in his long police career. Your kindness and decency made an impression on him when he was a young officer and I want to thank you.

This is one citizen of Baton Rouge that has not, and never will forget. I remember what I was doing the moment they announced this dreaded news. Here is a man simply doing his job who is cut down for no reason by a worthless individual, who by the way gets to live his life to this day. I am angered by this to this day. I did not know Ofc. Broussard personally, but he remains a hero of mine since that terrible afternoon in 1988. Since then, I consider all of you guys heroes. Sadly, it sometimes takes a tragic event like we recently had to remind us of this. Have we all forgotten? I certainly hope not....

I wish that we had gotten to know each other before all this happened. I never realized there was another "Doc" with the Dept. A former Navy corpsman and a fellow officer salute you for the price you paid.
Most of us are never called "heros" but you earned the title twice. You are truly a WARRIOR.
Rest easy, brother.

I find it sad to see that you only have 1 reflection left for you. Your service to your country during the Vietnam War is apparent in knowing that you were awarded the Navy Cross--although many do not give the respect that Vietnam veterans deserve. Your service to your community is just as apparent in knowing that you gave your life for them--you made the ultimate sacrifice!
Thank you for your service! Your brothers in blue will never forget your sacrifice, although since it's no longer a headline, most of the City of Baton Rouge has.

The Navy Cross is second only to the Medal of Honor. This man had to do something extradinary to win the Navy Cross!
A warrior, Indeed!
Sarge, as you now know, Jesus Loves You. So do we!
