Officer Edwards

Most of us in Law Enforcement grew up with the soul intent of serving our Community or our Country. I have been an officer for almost 30 years and within that time I lost a lot of great officers such as yourself. It brings sadness to my heart to find out you were shot by a member of your own department. Now I know it may have been an accident but you would have still been alive today if it wasn't for that.

I try to teach all the officers under my command the " Wait Shoot Policy". They are only to fire their service weapons when a person or persons causes an reason for " Lethal Force. When a suspect pulls a gun out and aims it at officers or when the suspect has his gun drawn and attempts to raise it at officers. You were a great officer and I know you have made many of your friends and loved one's happy.

When an officer down call goes over the radio I always fear the worst. It doesn't matter what department you are from you do the same job as all Peace Officers do. You are now a angel protecting us from the skies and patrolling the streets of Heaven. I want to offer my condolences to all those who have worked the beat with him, were friends or family or others in Law Enforcement Or Military.

I just went to a memorial 3 days ago for a fallen officer by the name of George Valentino Cortez JR. He was killed 07/27/2007 while attempting to detain a suspect accused of cashing forged checks. He also had 2 years on the job. We all face the danger of not coming home after our shifts. I have been injured only once " In The Line Of Duty".

(10-7) Officer Omar J Edwards You Will Be Deeply Missed And Never Forgotten. 10-7 is our radio code for " Out Of Service" I don't Know Radio Codes for New York PD. Make sure you watch over all of us as we will watch over your family and friends.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
