To Officer William Hesson, to all family members and friends who call him beloved, and to his law enforcement family:

I was sorry to learn of William's death and extend my sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you have suffered. Words are insufficient to describe the sadness I feel for the Hesson family. May you find comfort in your faith and the support of the law enforcement community.

There are many police survivors who share this same journey with you, and that community will be there to support you. William's memory will be forever honored and revered.

It is heartbreaking to know that another child will only know his father through pictures and the memories of other.
I hold your family in thought and prayer today, and pray for their solace.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service William gave to his community and the citizens of Ohio and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on April 29, 2009.

I want to offer my condolences to this truly dedicated Officer and his family. It's a shame to hear that another officer has paid the ultimate sacrifice. We protect our communities from harm but take the risk of not coming home. I appreciate the service you have given us.

I pray that you and your family get justice and that your wife and children are comforted in their sorrow. It seems too late and not enough to say thank you. I hope that you have been shown the lives you have touched by the profession you chose and the lives that will be touched because of children, teens, and adults you have influenced. I hope that people continue to contact your wife and children to share what you meant to them. Know that you left the world a better place and many are better off for having known you whether it be a short time or long. May seeds you have sown in people's lives bear good and abundant fruit. RIP

“Somebody killed a Juvenile Correctional Officer today, and a part of America died... A piece of our country he swore to protect will be buried with him at his side. The beat that he walked was a battle field; too, just as if he had gone off to war; though the flag of our nation won't fly at half-mast to his name they will add a gold star. The suspects that beat him will stand up in court with counsel demanding their rights, while a young widowed mother must work for her kids and spend many long, lonely nights. Yes, somebody killed a Juvenile Correctional Officer today... Maybe in your town or mine, while we slept in comfort behind our locked doors an officer put his life on the line. Now his ghost walks the beat in a dark institutional street, and he stands at each new rookie's side; He answered the call... of himself gave his all, and a part of America died...”

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Only those who have worked in Juvenile Corrections know the pain and heartache we feel on a daily basis. The system has become a daycare for future adult felons. Many in law enforcement look down on those in juvenile work, but many of those people would never what to do what we do. I know that Office Hesson went to work every day for the same reason I do, to try and make a difference in one kids life. We work in totally unsafe conditions, with a pair of handcuffs as backup, I hope something good can come from the loss of Officer Hesson. Increased security and officer safety training is so badly needed across the US. Thank you sir, for doing a thankless job.
