this was a officer that represented his badge with pride and i think everyday that i was priveledged to have known such a caring and top notch officer and had a part in his life at the eufaula police dept that i will always remember rest in peace my friend

The TRUE definition of a HERO, one that risks their life trying to save someone else. Officer Dexter Hammond was a TRUE HERO, a word that is used too frequently these days.

Wow It's still hard to believe. There are times I sit in dispatch and imagine you walking in to get your coffee. There are times I swear I hear you talking in the back with the guys. Dexter you made your mark at Headland Police Dept. from the guys who were just getting to know you to the ones of us who have known you forever you will forever be in our hearts, we will never forget you. To Police Officer Dexter Hammond, to all family members and friends who call him beloved, and to his law enforcement family:

I was sorry to learn of Dexter's death and extend my sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you have suffered. Words are insufficient to describe the sadness I feel for the Hammond family. May you find comfort in your faith and the support of the law enforcement community.

There are many police survivors who share this same journey with you, and that community will be there to support you. Dexter's memory will be forever honored and revered.

My son Larry Lasater died exactly four years earlier than Dexter after being fatally shot serving with the Pittsburg, CA Police Department.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Dexter gave to his community and the citizens of Alabama and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on April 24, 2009.

I had the privilege of attending basic SWAT School with Chief Hammond when we were police officers together in Eufaula. A truly great officer was lost on that day, may God bless his family and may he rest in peace.

My heart is broken,the day i heard that you were gone i tried to make it all a bad dream,it all became reality the day we laid you to rest. there wasn't a dry eye when headland dispatch called "Headland to 207" three times dispatch called out to you,my heart wanted so bad for you to answer,then with a saddened voice,dispatch called out " all units be advised 207 is 10-42".You always made a big entrance just like the day we both started to work at Midland city P.D. that day you made a differance in that community. on April 24th 2009 you left us. the 28th you made a huge exit with all the people that loved you leading the way.I know deep down in my soul the day you laid down your life you saved many lives. a friend of mine told me that it says in the Bible that GOD HONORS WARRIORS, I do not know what it means,but I am sure you do. REST IN PEACE DEXTER.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
