The Final Inspection
The warrior stood and faced God, Which must always come to pass,
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, you warrior,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"
The warrior squared his shoulders and
said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough,
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep,
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear,
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here,
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand,
I've never expected, or had much,
But if you don't, I'll understand."
There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod,
As the warrior waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, my Warrior,
You've borne your burdens well,
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets, You've done your time in Hell." Deputy Green Washington County Sheriff's Office 2008-12-22
Bill, I can't believe you are gone. It has been a long 10 days since the night of the incident. I can honestly say that notifying Terri, Page and Victor was the worst thing I have had to do in my 15 yr career with OSP. It was difficult to do but I was glad that I was there and able to do it. Your ceremony (if I must say) was one of the best funerals I have ever been to and being part of OSP's Honor Guard, I have been to a few. Don't worry about Terri and the kids. Myself and OSP are seeing that they are taken care of. I knew Terri a little before your passing and knew Page and Victor from our talks we had at work. What a wonderful family you have. I hope to continue a friendship with Terri and the kids. I will do whatever I can to ease the pain for your family. We are taking over from here. Gonna miss your laugh and your gruff words of wisdom. Rest easy, Bill Sr. Tpr. Peggy Bishop Oregon State Police-Salem 2008-12-22
