Two years ago today, we got the shocking news of your tragic accident. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. There was no way possible it could have been you. You were on top of your game. You were out making a difference. You were one that represented a true role model for others to strive to be like. There isn't a day goes by that you aren't missed. Even though you are not physically here, you are still making a difference in so many lives and we thank you for that.
One day we'll meet up again and you'll probably still be laughing of the time you pulled me over on my way running late to work. Wish I would have known that was going to be the last time I saw you. I would have been much later to work!
Miss you lil' Cuz!

If we could “Manufacture” Troopers, Trooper Brian McMillen would be the pattern. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about his positive influence on so many people within our Department. Brian had tremendous leadership qualities. When he was elected Class President, I went into my office and had to ask the other staff members, Who is Cadet McMillen? Brian wasn’t the type of person who gave “Rah, Rah” speeches in front of Academy staff…he lead by example and he brought the class together from behind the scenes. His classmates recognized he was special way before the staff noticed him.

This past Friday, Cadet Class 117 elected class officers. Prior to voting, I spoke to the class about the responsibilities of each position and warned them of the shoes they were attempting to fill. As class president, no assignment was too great for Trooper McMillen to tackle. Brian did not pretend to know everything. He knew it was important to get the entire class involved in projects. This gave each cadet a sense of pride because each of them was contributing.

After Brian graduated from the Academy, I was fortunate to back him up on a traffic stop. He was always looking to go beyond the traffic stop…looking for the “mother-load”.

Brian, my prayers will always be with you and your family. Rest Brother, you will never be forgotten.

Brian, I only met you once. You brought a prisoner into the Sangamon County Jail. You were truly one of the finest troopers to come into the facility. The morning I heard you had been killed while on duty is a day I will never forget. I think of you often, and pray for your family everyday. You were truly a hero and should never be forgotten. In May of this year I went to Washington DC for police memorial week with the Sangamon County Honor Guard. There was one name on the wall that I made a photo copy of. It was Brian C. McMillen. You are a hero and Heroes Live Forever! To your family: Thank you for giving Brian to us for the short time that we had him in the law enforcement family. Brian was truly unique, special, one of a kind. I feel blessed to have met Trooper McMillen. I only wish he would have been with us longer. I think he would have done some extrodinary things! Thank you Brian for answering the call for assistance that fateful night. I only wish is that it wouldnt have ended the way it did.

My prayers and thoughts go out with your family, and no worry brother the rest of us our still out there and are a little safer with you looking over all of us now. GOD BLESS!

Brian,
I think about you everyday, especially when am getting ready to go to work. I Recently joined Facebook and one of your classmates had a group picture and you were in it. As i saw your picture, i just froze for a min and said 'oh my god, there is Brian'. Now, i know we have never met, but everyone had nothing but great things to say about you. I still can't believe the ISP family has lost such a great Trooper who really believed in Integrity, Service, and Pride. I think about your family often, especially around the holidays. God bless you all.
To Angela: I know you might think its easy for me to say 'stay strong' but, how could you when even I get upset when i think about the loss of one of our own. Only time will make the healing process easier. As i read your last post on 04/16/09, I couldnt help but break down and cry because I really feel sorry for you. I do believe every word you posted. You are one of a kind.
Love you all
I will never forget you, Brian Mcmillen

I just hate that this is the only way that I can talk to you anymore. I just want to say that I miss you so much and I think about you all of the time. I know that you are always with me. I just wish you were here to see how far I've come and how your family is growing. You have so many neices and nephews here now and on the way. They may never get to meet you but they will always know who uncle Brian is. I just hate that I am the one here watching your family grow and you are not. You are so missed and no matter what I do or where I go my heart will always love and remember you and your love for me. You will always hold a special place in my heart that is so precious and will always be only yours.

I'm just so mad and sad right now. I guess today is just a bad day.

Well, please keep Ryan, Moon, Karri, and Crolly and all of our police friends and family safe.

Love you
me

Brian,

A little over a year ago after your untimely death, I just want to express how indebted all of us are to your impeccable and selfless service to the citizens of Illinois and beyond. Brother, your dedication to law enforcement and to your family, friends, and your faith were always an inspiration. Thank you for being such a good role model for me in epitomizing the core values of the ISP, "Pride, Integrity, and Service." Your service is revered, sir, and will never be forgotten. My prayers and well-wishes go out to your family and the rest of the friends that were privileged to know you. As I go to the Academy on Saturday, let me tell you that you service will be one of the biggest factors that will drive me to succeed!

God bless you and I just hope that when I finish my training and get out on the road, I can come just a little bit close to epitomizing the integrity, pride, and service that you displayed as a proud and faithful member of the Illinois State Police family as a troop.

Thanks, Troop and rest easy brother. It's good to know we got you patrolling up in heaven watching over us. God must have needed a really great person and a truly faithful leader for the job. :)Tprs Hager, Clarke, and I were just talking about that a few weeks back buddy. WE SALUTE YOU BROTHER.

One year Brian and it still makes me have questions. I know that you are always around. Today just marked one mile stone and we have more to come. It is not easy, but we are getting by. I talked to Angel several times this week. Neither of us can get over this. We talk about all of the events that took place this time last year. I remember some and Ang remebers some. Some of it we can talk about others it almost stops us in our tracks. Kim had a hard time today as well. I know we just have to keep moving forward, but it seems like there is an anchor slowing us down. I have kept an eye on your beat, but not as good as you. Angela said that she always remembers when you signed on at the start of your shift. She says that you would tell them Springfield 9-96, 10-41. Angela says that radio gave you your assignment for the night and your would say 10-4, patrol other. Well that Brian you are, patrol other. It is hard to deal with, but you are the man for the job. We miss you very much. Please keep an eye on all of us and give Angela strength. May god be with the McMillen family, District 9 Illinois State Police, and my family. Thank you Brian for all that you have done.

Always your brother,
Ryan

HEY BRIAN,

IT'S BEEN NEARLY A YEAR NOW SINCE YOUR LOSS AND IT STILL HITS ME JUST AS HARD THINKING ABOUT IT. I KNOW PEOPLE ALWAYS SPEAK HIGHLY OF SOMEONE ONCE THEY PASS, BUT I WANT EVERYONE TO KNOW THAT THESE AREN'T JUST WORDS. OUR CLASS PICTURE HANGS RIGHT NEXT TO MY UNIFORM. EVERYDAY I PUT ON THAT UNIFORM I SEE YOUR FACE. I SEE HOW PROUD WE ALL WERE STANDING THERE...IN OUR MINDS WE WERE ON TOP OF THE WORLD.

I ONLY KNEW YOU THE SIX MONTHS WE SPENT AT THE ACADEMY, BUT I CAN HONESTLY SAY YOU WERE ONE OF THE GREATEST MEN I HAVE EVER MET. AFTER WE GRADUATED I WANTED TO SEND YOU A THANK YOU CARD FOR EVERYTHING YOU DID FOR US OUT THERE. I NEVER GOT TO SENDING YOU THAT CARD BRIAN, BUT THANK YOU. WE'RE NOW IN OUR 3RD YEAR ON THE JOB BRIAN AND YOU HAVE BEEN AS MUCH OF AN INSPIRATION TO ME ON THE ROAD AS YOU WERE IN THE ACADEMY. I TRY TO DO MY BEST OUT THERE BECAUSE I KNOW I LOVE THE JOB AS MUCH AS YOU DID.

I KNOW WE ALL SAY 10-42 BRIAN, BUT I KNOW WHAT YOUR SAYING, 10-41...I KNOW YOU WON'T END YOUR SHIFT TILL YOU SEE US ALL HOME SAFELY EVERY NIGHT. THANKS AGAIN BRIAN.

Dear Brian,
Nine months have past since God decided he needed one of the finest. It was just two years ago I was photographing your wedding and can remember the tears in your eyes the first time you saw Angela in her beautiful gown. You were so in love. You accomplished so much in your life and meant so much to all of us. Going to a McMillen family function just isn't the same without the humor you brought with you.
I'll never forget the last time I saw you. I was running late for work and sure enough coming off of I-55 a state trooper was behind me. The lights come on... and it's was you. I will have to say I was releived, but I think it just made your day to pull over your cousin. I'll never forget your laugh. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that was going to be the last time I saw you or I would have been five minutes late for work to chat with you longer.
You are missed Brian! We all think and talk of you often.

Brian,
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand
Rest easy Trooper, you always did your best

I just found out today of Brian's passing and I am very saddened. I had the opportunity to play a few pick up games with Brian at UIS when he would come and play in the off season. He had a fantastic attitude and everyone loved it when Brian made his three pointers. Brian's family, friends, and co-workers have been blessed by getting the chance to know him, and Brian will always live in the minds and hearts of the many he touched. God bless his family and all the heroes like Brian whose desire is to make the world a better place for all.

It takes a Hero to due what you did day after day for both the state of Illinois and is this country. Your sacrafices will not be forgotten. You will not be forgotten.

During this time of Christmas celebration and festivities, I can't help but remember this young man's family. My brother ISP Sgt Det. Rodney Miller also met his untimely death in his squad car. It has been over a year now, but we still miss him dearly. Some things become more comfortable but your brother, son, nephew, grandson, and husband's memory will always be with you. It is the constant support of friends, family and your faith that will continue to get you thru this difficult time. I just wanted you to that our family still thinks of your family.
