Dale, if you were still here how life would have been different. When I think of you I remember the times being at your house with DJ and how you messed around with us. In the end you were my second father. After you past my life has dramatically changed. I don't even live at home anymore. Your sacrifice has shown me that there is still strong men in this world. I hope that maybe one day I might be as strong as you. The thought of seeing you again in Heaven one day soon drives me one day by day. I wish you were here. Thank you for all the things you did for me. See you later.

The house isn't finished yet, but if you were still alive you would have loved it... except that there are like no more trees at home, oh and Raderette finally had a colt... she is so cute and her name is Summer. can't wait to see you in heaven!

Officer Sherrill's family,How can anyone say Thank you
You have all given so much. I hope that you find some comfort in knowing that Officer Sherrill will always be remembered as a true hero.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Dale gave to his community and the citizens of Texas, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on October 19, 2007.

To Deputy Sherrill's family, friends, and co-workers,

Starting on May 10th 2008 at 0800 hours I began a journey to the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial in Washington D.C. from Portsmoth VA with 1100 fellow officers. The catch is we were traveling the 250 miles on bicycles for the 2008 Police Unity Tour. On our ride every officers rides in rememberance of a fallen brother or sister. This year I had the honor of riding in your memory.

I had a laminated photo of you with your name and department zip tied to my handle bars and an engraved wrist band with our name on my right wrist. Those items gave me inspiration several times when I felt I could go no further Well eventualy we all made it to D.C and to the 27th annual candel light vigil on May 13th at the memorial.

After the emotional service standing with thousands of police officers in honor and rememberance of our brothers and sisters who feel in 2007 I made my way over to the section of wall where your name is enscribed. As i stood there a woman asked what section it was and said she was looking for your name. It was your wife along with your son and brother. I spoke with them and provided them the wrist band I had wore on my ride. I stood for a photo with your son infront of your wall and ensured your family that they will forever be a part of our family. I truely hope that son will always rembmber that night and the thousands of officers who came to honor the memory of his father. It is a moment in my live I know I will never forget, and in that your memory will live on.

Rest in peace brother and watch over the rest of us as we continure our service.

As Sergeant/Investigator for the Jefferson Police Department I had the honor of working closely with Dale. Together Dale and I closed several drug related cases in Marion County and the city of Jefferson, Texas. Dale was a very professional and dedicated officer. His ability to make me laugh will never be forgotten. This brings to mind an example of Dale's wit and love for practical jokes. Late one night myself and several other tactial team officers were gathered at the Marion County Sheriff's Office after a lengthy covert drug operation. Dale found a Wal-Mart vest someone had left at the office. Dale put the vest on and hung a cigarette from the corner of his mouth, and in a voice sounding alot like Captain Eddie Hindsman told everyone that this is what Captain Hindsman will look like after he retires and goes to work for Wal-Mart as a greeter. Dale and I often talked about his love for music, for which we had in common, and his working with the youth in his church. Dale and I were entry team members serving on the Marion County/Jefferson Police tactical entry team. The patch we wore on the sleeve of our team uniform reflected his attitude toward law enforcement. "FEAR NONE/RESPECT ALL". Dale was an outstanding peace officer as well as an outstanding citizen, husband, and father. Dale will be missed by all, but not forgotten, for he touched so many people in his short time here on earth. I miss you brother! God Speed! Rest in peace my friend.

I met Dale in Keene TX, many years ago, when he started to volunteer with the Keene Fire Department. Those are distant memories now.

The recent memories of Dale are when I would see him at Nameless Valley Ranch and Camp Yorktown Bay. He would show up at camp every year, involved with his children and their friends.

He and I would sit around telling stories and laughing a lot. His sense of humor was one of my favorite.

I will miss Dale at summer camp this next summer, and the summers after......... What a blessing and great example he was to the kids that he helped and influenced.

May God comfort you Sandi, and your wonderful children.

Dale was just 9 months old when his uncle and I got married.
I always thought he was the cutest little baby. He was always happy and smiling and a delight to be around. I remember how very much his Grandma Turk loved him. We lived with Grandma & Grandpa Turk for two months when Dale was 11/2 and we saw him every day then because his Mom worked with Grandma making cushions for Bonanza Steak Houses. As Dale grew up we usually saw him once a year and he was still
always smiling and happy and joking and fun to be around. He was a tender hearted person. He was 13 when his uncle, Tom Turk died and his Mom told me that he took it very hard and was unable to go to school for several days. His uncle
and Dale were just 2 years apart in age when they died. Kind of ironic and tragic. Whenever I talked to Dale's Mom on the phone I would always ask about the boys and she would always tell me how Duane & Dale and their families were doing. I was always glad to hear what good boys and young men and husbands and fathers they were. I know when Jesus returns soon we will be reunited with Dale and Tom and the grandparents. That will be a wonderful reunion day.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I'm very glad I met Mr. Dale. He really Impacted my life by showing me that some people did care about my generation and he really showed it to me. I'm glad I got to play guitar with him in the school band. And i appreciate him taking care of me and my two friends in Arkansas when we had to go to the ER. He made me as a single person feel big like I could do something to make a big difference. From his example I see one person can change many lives. I can't wait to see him in heaven. I love you Mr. Dale, thanks for everything.
