I served with Scott Bell on USS Voge and lost track of him several years ago but have never forgotten him. I just heard about this tragedy and am deeply saddened. He was a truly exceptional person and shipmate and I'm sure he was exceptional law enforcement officer as well.
It is made all the worse knowing that his death was caused by a drunk driver. Rest in peace, the world was a better place when you were with us.

Sometimes you get the bad guy and sometimes he gets you. Officer Bell served proudly and was deeply loved and respected by those who knew him. It is a tragedy to lose him. We never know when our lives on this earth will end, but we can make a reservation in Heaven now and assure us a place when God calls us to Himself. Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life
(John 14:6) and He PAID the price for our sins on the Cross so we don't have to pay the penalty for our sins. Yipee! If we accept His payment by faith we can have salvation and spend eternity with Him in Heaven. It is not something we must earn, it is a gift. The most precious one we can ever receive. "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith_and this not from yourselves, it is the GIFT of God_not by good deeds, so that no one can boast." Ephesians 2: 8,9. For without faith, it is impossible to please God. And our faith must be in God's only Son, Jesus Christ.
You were a credit to the uniform, Officer Bell. Thanks for glorifying the Lord
thru your work and witness. My heart goes out to your loved ones left behind and may the Lord comfort them as only He can.

Scott and I were stationed together onboard the USS Voge in Mayport Florida. When Scott made Chief, we had an opportunity to get to know one another and became good friends. I had been away from Jacksonville for a number of years and had heard Scott was back in Jax and was on the force. Since relocating back to Jax in 2005 I have thought on many occasions that I should reconnect with Scott. I was actually in the process of doing that when I discovered that he had been killed. My memories of Scott are that he was one of the hardest working and most professional people I have ever met and most importantly he was a great friend. I did not know his family but want them to know that they are in my prayers.

My deepest sympathy to Scott's family. I did not know Scott, but from what I have seen on this page and heard about him, he was one heck of a man. God Bless you Scott for all that you did for your community and your country. Rest in peace my brother.

IN YOUR MEMORY

Don't cry because you think I'm gone,
for I am with you still.
Don't seek reasons to explain
what is simply just God's will.

It's very hard to leave all of you
and everything I've known,
but my work on earth is done now.
Our Lord has called me home.

I know you will find comfort
Just let faith guide your way.
Cause, from the moment I was born,
I have been preparing for this day.

Remember me for the laughter,
that's the greatest gift we give.
Keep me in your heart and mind
because that's where I now live.

If ever you feel you need me,
you can close your eyes and see,
I'm still right here with you,
I'm alive in your memory.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Everytime I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the man they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Officer Bell, especially to his wife. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. You will be in my thoughts.

From reading the reflections left for Eric, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Eric's life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Eric's life was about so much more than the way he died. Eric will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.

Officer Bell, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my late fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been almost five years but we still miss him terribly.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

I was just looking over the ODMP and visited your memorial when I saw your death was contributed to a drunk driver. My dept is proactive enough to have established a fulltime DUI unit.DUI seems to be the crime that gets the least attention until someone dies. There is 'talk' of stiffening DUI sentencing guidelines here in Alabama but right now that is all it is.It's so odd how a drug trafficker can receive such stiff punishment and a DUI offender is forgotten about. It might be because of the many social drinkers on a given weekend are politicians , politicians family , and even as sad as it is other law enforcement themselves. When their caught it's swept under the rug or evidence for court comes up mysteriously missing.

I grieve not only for your family but the senseless way in which you died. I pray your family has the strength to be outspoken against DUI. Rest in Peace.

Scott,
I met you when I was the recruiter and not too many days went by without you calling me to ask when you were going to be hired. You made sure that I knew exactly who you were. Because of your persistence, you became "One of Jacksonville Finest".

Remember the day we were talking at the gate station and I backed my police car into that limo. I was so embarrassed and you knew exactly what to say when I broke down and cried. Thats just how you were. I will never forget you Scott. You are truly one in a million.

I will miss you,

Scott,
Unfortunatly I did not get the pleasure of meeting you. Judging from what other officers tell me about you, I really missed out on meeting a great person. You will be greatly missed but never forgotten. Rest in peace brother. May God Bless You and your family.
