Hey Dad, Bennett and I were in the report writing room tonight talking about how we carried the shift and took 16 calls tonight! I couldn't help but think about you limping through the kitchen, holding your back with that silly smile, telling how "oohhh, my back hurts, I carried the shift tonight!" Everyday I hope you're proud of the job I do, and how I try to treat people the way you taught me. The greatest compliment I ever receive is always - "I knew your Dad, he was a great man, and you're following right in his footsteps." We still talk about the back brace sometimes, and Capt. Weidner constantly reminds me that he saved my life on several occassions when the 2 of you talked about me. It's been 2 years, and not a day, a shift, a football game, a song, my puppy...nothing - that doesn't make me think of you. The golf benefit was amazing this year. So many people came out in your memory! I realize more and more everytime someone talks to me about you how lucky I am to have had 27 years with a Dad like you! Please keep all the guys safe, and help me be the best I can be!

Gary,
I do miss our conversations we had at shift change and the many other ones we had when we met on calls. You always had a way about you and the way you explained things to people and fellow officers to where they knew they were the ones you were focused on. I will never forget the night I received the page about your leaving us to take up a position with God's Police Force. I will never forget you or our conversations. I now have a second "co-pilot" besides God in my patrol car...you. Your memorial pin will always stay in my patrol car and I look to it often and hear your voice as if we were talking or as if you were talking over the radio to fellow officers or dispatch. Rest Well Hero...We Will Take Over Your Watch...

"The Badge" He starts his shift each day To respond to calls unknown. He drives a marked patrol car. A police officer he is known. He's paid by the citizens' taxes To make it safe on the streets. But he usually has a second job 'Cause a waitress has his salary beat. Now he doesn't know a holiday 'Cause he works all year round. And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive At his home he cannot be found. He's cursed and assaulted often, The one whos blood runs blue. He seldom ever gets a thanks, To some he's just a fool. His friends are always other cops 'Cause people just don't understand That underneath his badge and gun, He's just another man. He knows there might not be a tomorrow In this world of drugs and crime. And he gets so mad at the court system 'Cause the crooks don't get any time. And each day when he leaves for work, He prays to God above. Please bring me home after my shift So I can see the ones I love. But tonight he stops a speeding car, He's alone down this ole' highway. It's just a little traffic infraction. He does it everyday. Well, he walks up to the driver's window, And his badge is shining bright. He asked the guy for a driver's license, When a shot rang through the night. Yes, the bullet hit its mark, Striking the officer in the chest. But the Department's budget didn't buy Each officer a bullet-proof vest. So he lay on the ground bleeding. His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red. And briefly he thought of his loved ones 'Cause in a moment the officer was dead. In the news they told the story Of how this officer had died. And some who listened cared less, But those who loved him cried. Well, they buried him in uniform With his badge pinned on his chest. He even had his revolver, He died doing his best. Sgt. Henderson,
I grew up in Connersville Indiana so I always had to play against those hard hitting Shelbyville boys in H.S. football. Just from reading the reflections from your men it shows what a positive impact you had on them, making them and molding them into leaders. Thanks for being the Warrior Sergeant that you were and thank you for so many years of service, protecting and serving the citizens of Shelbyville Indiana. This life is but a blink of an eye, the real life begins in heaven. I hope to see you there someday.
May God bless your family, your fellow officers and the citizens of Shelbyville Indiana they have lost a true friend. Darron Sparks Anderson Indiana Police Dept. 2007-11-12

Gary,
This is so hard to do. I just wanted you to know how much you are loved and how much you are missed! Even though I live in VA and we didn't see each other as much as I would have liked you still tried to watch out for me. Thanks for all the memories of our growing up years together. Now I won't have anyone looking up my records to see if I've gotten any tickets lately and telling on me! I lovw you. Things will never be the same. Jeanne your sister. Jeanne sister 2007-11-03

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Everytime I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the man they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Sergeant Henderson, especially to his wife. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. You will be in my thoughts.
From reading the reflections left for Gary, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Gary's life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Gary's life was about so much more than the way he died. Gary will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.
Sergeant Henderson, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my late fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been almost five years but we still miss him terribly.
Wishing you brighter and better days,
Jocelyne :)
