To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by healthy child; a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded. by Ralph Waldo Emerson

Chris,

Nobody can ever replace the friendship that you gave. Noone can ever take the empty spce that was left in my heart the day that you died. I wasn't always nice to you and, for that, I am truly sorry. I miss you like crazy! I don't think I realized how attached I was to you until you left. Now, it's too late!

Please, watch your babies from up above and protect them from all evil!!!

I Love You!

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Everytime I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the man they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Patrolman Mirabal. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. You will be in my thoughts.

From reading the reflections left for Christopher, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Christopher's life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Christopher's life was about so much more than the way he died. Christopher will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.

Patrolman Mirabal, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my late fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been almost five years but we still miss him terribly.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

ODE to CHRIS

Only Three Blocks Away

Only three blocks away.......
The wings of white doves unfolded and embraced a father, my brother’s son, a mother’s son, a family man, a friend and a fellow brother police officer. One last call to dispatch before you go home to be with your children, lights beaming and siren screaming from your motorcycle and God created a guardian angel. Only three blocks away...your last call to dispatch came in.

Only three blocks away your last call came, wearing the badge of nine ( 9) years of bravery and courage not knowing any day when your call may come in. .

Only three blocks away a flag is flown in your honor. Men, women and children placing their hands over their hearts in your honor as we pass by celebrating your life. Your life has touched so many in the world as a State Police Officer. Burning is the torch of the flame of the ultimate sacrifice you gave...your life. Only three blocks away..

A brother officer whispers in my ear “I wear the state police officer’s uniform, God let me go home safe to my family.” I answered him, “The war in the streets in America still goes on as we pray for every officer.” Only three blocks away..

Your smile built a bridge of love and touched so many during the journey of life.

A father is proud of how a son lived his life. His mother says, “his mission must have been completed.” My brother’s son called in three blocks away that he was going home and Chris rode away in God’s arms with a smile.

Dear Mrs. Mirabal & Family:

Heart felt thoughts and prayers are with you and yours. Your loss is so great. Time sometimes does not seem to be our friend. Time does not take the hurt away. The loss of your partner & father is so great. I know it hurts to know that James will not be here to see our beautiful son grow into a man, but I remind myself how blessed I am that James was in my life. Christopher is always watching over you, and as long as we keep them in our thoughts, their memories never fade. May God Bless you this Christmas with love and friendship, & peace of heart.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I grew up in Alamo, while you were an officer there. I had heard many stories about you, but never met you until after I had started my application to our Department, while I was working at the jail. I was racing to work when you stopped me. I made it through almost a year ago now. I wish I could have actually gotten to meet you. I know that you are watching over heaven as you did around Alamogordo, Tularosa and the surrounding areas. RIP brother.

Chris:

It has been 4 long months since I have not been able to see or talk to you. You were more than "just some cop." You were a friend. You helped when nobody else would. You gave when there was something needed.

I know this because I went through a time when my life was torn to pieces... I lost my very best friend, my sister. When this happened, you were there to talk to and you listened. I thank you and will never forget what you did for me and my family. You gave us piece of mind..

For that, I thank you!
For being there and being my friend, I will always love you!

I miss you and think of you everyday...

See you in heaven : )

"My Brother"

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was idealistic and believed he could make a difference.
He was immensely proud of the uniform and the badge and what they represent.
He felt privileged to be of service to his department, his community and to his country.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was friendly, courteous, and polite, yet firm.
He laughed and joked, but was serious when necessary.
He was competent, trained, and professional.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He had a strong sense of right and wrong and became
frustrated when true justice became sidetracked.
He felt the sharp criticism that goes with the job, but he
never wavered.
He stood by and for his fellow officers.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He longed for his family during the long hours.
He worried about them during his shifts and the lonely
weekends, holidays and midnights when they were apart.
He felt guilty about the lost time, but knew his calling
and prayed they would understand.

He was a cop.

Although I never met him, I knew him.
He was a good son, a loving husband, and a devoted father.
He was dedicated to the profession and cared about the
people he served.
He wanted to do the best job that he could and strived to
be the best he could be.
He was a good citizen and a good neighbor.

He was a cop.

Yes, I did know him.
He was a cop, he was my Brother.

Rest easy Brother Mirabal, we have the watch...

”I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.”
---Isaiah 6:8

You answered the call and made the ultimate sacrifice. Rest easy in God's kingdom and watch over us as we continue the battle here on earth!!!

To the family of Chris', my heart goes out to you. He was a great person, helpful, generous, did everything he could to make others feel special. He loved his family, you could just tell that from his actions and the way he spoke about you. He especially loved his kids, they meant so much to him, he would do anything to make them happy.
To Chris, I will miss you, you were a special person. There are far and few between people like you, you knew that, and knew that I knew that too. You were a "dork", and you know what I mean. You were probably the only person I could count on for help, a best friend if you say, and I hope you knew that. You are loved, and will be missed.

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"

Asst. Chief Justin K. Nevels
Clinton, LA Police Department
