"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day To respond to calls unknown. He drives a marked patrol car. A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes To make it safe on the streets. But he usually has a second job 'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday 'Cause he works all year round. And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often, The one whos blood runs blue. He seldom ever gets a thanks, To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops 'Cause people just don't understand That underneath his badge and gun, He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow In this world of drugs and crime. And he gets so mad at the court system 'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work, He prays to God above. Please bring me home after my shift So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car, He's alone down this ole' highway. It's just a little traffic infraction. He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window, And his badge is shining bright. He asked the guy for a driver's license, When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark, Striking the officer in the chest. But the Department's budget didn't buy Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding. His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red. And briefly he thought of his loved ones 'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story Of how this officer had died. And some who listened cared less, But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform With his badge pinned on his chest. He even had his revolver, He died doing his best.

Steve,
I know that you were happy last year on this day. You were very excited to be part of the motorcade for President Bush. But I will never forget hearing about the accident that morning on the radio and wondering who it was, hoping that it was not you. Then I got the call that charged everyone’s life forever. I know that Barb and the kids are doing a lot better and the fun run that they did in your memory was so honorable, but yet I know they still miss you very much and I know it must be hard on them. You were there everything and you will always be remembered and missed. I know that you are looking down on Barb and kids and are proud to see how Keahi has grown into such a young gentlemen taking over the roll as the man of the house following your footstep, Kiana is getting so big and beautiful and always looking after her little brothers, Matthew has grown into a big boy and mommies little helper and Jake is so cute, he reminds me sometimes of you because he always has such a great big smile on his face every time you see him. In your short life you made a great impact on all the people you came into contact with and I know you will never be forgotten. Please watch over Barb and the kids and keep them safe.

Brother Steve-O,
You and your wife and children have been on my mind and heart heavily as the 10 month anniverssary of your passing approached. I always recall how much you spoke of them when we were away for military duty and how you glowed after speaking with them each night. I always thought "what a lucky guy". One conversation came to mind when you spoke about Barbara and how lucky you were to have found a wife who was beautiful, smart , strong and independent. Although I have never met your wife and children I can see now what you were always talking about, she is all the above and your children are a direct reflection of that. I saw her on TV and read an article in the newspaper about a very special memorial run and fair she is putting in loving memory of you. Seeing your wife and children smiling and happy has helped me heal and to be able to move on now from the grief that I have held for so long. That positive attitude that she has and the strength that she has to share and celebrate your memory with the community is inspiring and will help many others hearts heal. You would be so proud of her and the kids, especially Keahi who is was so well spoken for 8 years old. It takes a lot of strength to pull through a tragic event while trying to raise 4 small children, I think most people shudder at the thought of being faced with that task but your wife has somehow through the grace of God perservered. And to be able to find a way to honor you in such a big way, I still think you are a lucky guy. Rest in peace Bro, your wife and kids are doing OK and they are thriving, take care and I will never forget the awesome man that you were. J. Friend

I have my computer personalized to show my husband's page, Deputy David Grant/EOW/5/31/04 when the ODMP site comes up-but today instead Steve's picture came up-I looked at his sweet smiling face and read the reflections and realized what a wonderful person he must of been. I thought of his family and my family and all we have been through-trying to figure out how to live without people like Dave & Steve.Dave was Hawaiian & Portuguese and spent 8 of his 28 law enforcement years on motors. I guess Steve's picture reminded me of Dave and I thought of how much passion these officers have for their work and for their families. They are the special ones and they were taken too soon.
