To Correctional Officer Judith Ann Henkel and her loved ones:

On this the twelth anniversary of your tragic death, please know that your memory is honored and revered today.

Judith, you are one of the rare heroes among us. You did a tough job in a tough place. No matter what you were called upon to do, you always met our expectations. Your selflessness and dedication are awe-inspiring.

Many, many years ago I was one of the first female officers to work in a male prison in California. I know the challenges this brave woman faced and she ultimately gave her life to see that the job was done.

This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you, Judith. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.

Rest in Peace, C.O. Henkel. I am so humbled by your valor and courage.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Judith gave to her community and the citizens of Califonia, and for the supreme sacrifice she and her family made on February 4, 1995.

Twelve years have passed since your EOW but you have not been forgotten nor will your loved ones or the Blue Family ever let that happen. Thank you for your service. I gave over 30 years to law enforcement and I always had the utmost respect for those working in our country's prison system because of the danger of being locked up with animals and not being armed. You are a true hero and heroes never die. You will never be forgotten.

The Family Of Officer Henkel,

In the beginning, I wondered if I would ever make it through. There were periods of anger, sadness, pain, and grief, times when I wondered, "WHY ME"?. But one day, there was a glinmpse of light, and then another. The clouds began to break apart, and I started to see beyond them. The times when I felt happy and safe began to outnumber the times when I felt sad and frightened. New friendships were formed, feelings of trust and resolution began to replace past feelings of hopelessness and self-doubt. I seemed to emerge from the darkness into the light with a new sense of empowerment. I now realize that there are things about my past that I cannot change, but I can stop them from controlling my life and my happiness. I know that this part of my life will never go away entirely, but it has begun to take a less prominent place in my existence. I have begun to allow other thoughts to enter my mind, and I have a better understanding of myself. My Strengths and weaknesses. I'm not afraid to set limits. I've begun to enjoy life again and to think about the future. I can now look back on this time for what it was, a period of growth, self-discovery, and healing!!!! God Bless.
