Your heroism and service is honored today, the third anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

I just found out about your passing and I am terribly moved and sorry. I haven't seen you in over 20 years but the memories I have of you are so fond...you were one of the people that made the swimmeets at Milikin so much fun.
I will always remember you with great fondness.

It has been more than two years since you left us. Sadly, I just learned of your tragedy. I remember you in the Millikin Swimming pool. The last time we talked, we shared interest in reviving the Millikin Alumni Swim Meet. Like many of us, I strive to be like you. You are extremely admired for your competitiveness, your leadership, good sportsmanship, and your ability to keep everyong smiling. However, I believe you are most remembered for your integrity. You made all of us better human beings. That, my friend, is the greatest thing that anyone can leave behind. I am sad and angry that I couldn't pay my last respects. I didn't know. I am sorry.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

A great man with a big heart. That is how I remember Rodney Miller. I first met him back in 1994. He was working a case that was close to my wife and I. We would always return a phone call or be happy to just call you and ask how you were doing. He instantly made you feel like a good friend even if you had just met him. He had a very strong drive of perfection in his everyday duties. His professionalism was unmatched.

I continued my friendship with Rodney I became employed with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office in 1997. It was very common to get a phone call at the jail and it be Rodney. He would stop by the jail quite often while working a case or just to say hello. He always had a smile on his face and was happy to make the effort to walk over to you and shake your hand. If he ever had a bad day, you would never know it.

I heard the news of his passing on the radio. I couldn’t believe it and had to make some calls just to make sure it was true...It was so hard to go home and tell my wife. My heart will forever go out to his family and friends. Sergeant Miller was a great man.

I would be the first one to help a fellow officer if he/she requested it. Though I never met you I'm sure you were a respected officer, a great husband, and father. I know that down here in Central Illinois and good ole District 10 we all feel for the loss your family has gone through.

I was hunting in Greene County last week. Just one year ago we had met up there. I really enjoyed our conversations and emails after we had met. I thought about you many times while sitting in a tree stand this year. I have continued to pray for your family and will continue to do so.

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Everytime I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the man they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Sergeant Miller, especially to his wife. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. You will be in my thoughts.

From reading all the reflections left for Rodney, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Rodney's life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Rodney's life was about so much more than the way he died. Rodney will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.

Sergeant Miller, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been three years but we still miss him terribly.
