"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day To respond to calls unknown. He drives a marked patrol car. A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes To make it safe on the streets. But he usually has a second job 'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday 'Cause he works all year round. And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often, The one whos blood runs blue. He seldom ever gets a thanks, To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops 'Cause people just don't understand That underneath his badge and gun, He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow In this world of drugs and crime. And he gets so mad at the court system 'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work, He prays to God above. Please bring me home after my shift So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car, He's alone down this ole' highway. It's just a little traffic infraction. He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window, And his badge is shining bright. He asked the guy for a driver's license, When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark, Striking the officer in the chest. But the Department's budget didn't buy Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding. His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red. And briefly he thought of his loved ones 'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story Of how this officer had died. And some who listened cared less, But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform With his badge pinned on his chest. He even had his revolver, He died doing his best.

Tommy was a motivated, professional officer, who took his responsibilities as a law enforcement officer very seriously.
He was truly working in the field he loved and would have gone a long way in Fish and Wildlife had he had the opportunity.
He was a great guy and a lot fun. Truly one of a kind. We miss him deeply and will do so for the remainder of our days. Former Police Officer Patrick Zerkle Cobb County PD, Tommys brother in law 2007-05-23
The Pirate
It’s May 2003 Tommy’s wearing his James Bond suit And a green bandana His long hair is in a pony tail The dark room is full of people The children are in the lobby with Tommy and Tammy Learning a jig While brothers and roommates Say goodbye Because the girls are still young They fidget in their dresses and Kick off their shiny black shoes The best man and the groom Start a can-can in kilts While their mothers flush with laughter Because the girls are still young They fight off their stockings I think of when Tommy was a pirate And the visits where he’d Wrap us in his favorite flannel shirt And hug us until we Felt completely welcome And the awkward feeling Melted away Then the first few Bitter sweet notes of an Irish song Can be heard through the crowd Because the girls are still young They notice The Pirates feet begin A beautiful complex jig Through childish giggles they imitate his dance Placing their feet Where his once were Because the girls are still young Life lasts forever
You will always be in my heart Tommy! Words can not even begin to explain all that you were and still are to your family and friends.I know that you and Uncle Tom are smiling down on us everyday! I love you and miss you! Shannon Nelson cousin 2007-05-08

My Daddy You have watched me grow from the heavens above, Oh, how I have missed those arms of love. I have learned how to walk and talk and growl like a bear, First I am here and then over there. Mommy says I am just like you, and I make her laugh at the funny things I do. I know there is some reason God took you from this earth, Even when it was only a short time before by birth. You are in heaven now, keep a watchful eye on me, watch me grow and learn my ABC's. I have a lot of special people keeping me from harm, I am learning from them what a great man you are. I see the pictures and your name etched in stone, But, it is still hard to understand, Mommy & Me here alone. Other kids have their daddys to play in the park, But, I have you with me, at all times, here in my heart. Mommy keeps saying how proud you would have been of me, But, I am proud too, of My Daddy, you see. Friend of Mark Sawyers EOW 6-5-04 Michigan 2006-12-08

Tommy and I became housemates and good friends in Maynooth, Ireland when Tommy spent a year at the university there in the late 1980s. I later spent some of the best weeks of my life with him and his family at their home in New York in 1988.
As sometimes happens with friends we lost touch over the years, Tommy was a wanderer and so was I, but I've been thinking about him lately and today searched for him on the internet hoping to make contact with him again.
I was devastated to find only his obituary.
I remember his strength and I look at his picture on this page (where are your flowing locks Tommy?) and wonder how could such a vital, energetic, vigourous man go this way?
I'm not surprised he entered into the service of his fellow Americans. He was a lovely person.
His wife and children and mother and siblings must be inconsoleable to have lost him. My thoughts are with them.
Rest in Peace Tommy.

Rest easy Brother. Albertville Police Department Albertville, Al 2006-02-25
The policeman stood and faced God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining, Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman. How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To my church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No lord, I guess I ain't, Because those of us who carry a badge can't always be a saint."
I've had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough, and sometimes I've been violent, Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny, That wasn't mine to keep Though I worked a lot of overtime When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help, Though at time I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place Among the people here. They never wanted me around Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord, It needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don't I'll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne Where the saints had often trod. As the policeman waited quietly, For the judgement of his god.
"Step forward now, policeman, You've born your burdens well. Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets, You've done your time in hell"
