Deputy Kievernagel was a great man and an honorable officer. His legend carries on in the hearts, stories, and thoughts of his family and friends. He will always be missed and the world will never be the same again without him. Even those who never knew him are impacted by his actions today; he truly was a blessing to this world.

A somber friend

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

HIGH FLIGHT

By John G. Magee, Jr.

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter - silvered wings;

Sunward I have climbed and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed - wheeled and soared and swung.

High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew.

And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN!

Police Officer

One year ago today, I started my career as a peace officer. One year ago today, was your EOW. I, with my field training officer, were first on scene to the crash site of Star 6. I know that everyone on scene did everything that they could for Joseph and Kevin. We all gave all that we could. To the families and friend of Joseph and Kevin, I am so sorry that you lost such wonderful men in such an untimely manner. I will never forget July 13. My prayers are with you and your families.

Thank you for your sacrifice. It is clear that you were loved by your family and cherished by friends and co-workers alike.

I hope you enjoy the real wings you earned when the manmade earthly ones failed. God lifted you in His embrace that day. May His peace and comfort fill all you knew with love today.

Dear Deputy Kievernagel:

After reading what your sister wrote in tribute to you on the NLEOMF personal tributes, I can see that you are deeply and infinitely loved and respected by her. I am so touched and moved by her words and feel such pride for your honorable service. I remember clearly the day you and Deputy Kevin Blount were tragically killed. I live very close to where the accident occurred and became alarmed and filled with a numbing dread when I heard all the sirens and saw the law enforcement vehicles rush past my home en route to the lake. I knew something was terribly wrong. When I heard what had happened my heart dropped, again. I felt heavy and so incredibly sad for what I knew your family had to face in the coming days, weeks, how everything would change forever. I am so sorry for your untimely death. Thank you so much for your service and commitment.

To Angela and the Kievernagel family, I share your pain and grief and know your loss. Most especially you, Angela, as a sister losing one you love so much, I know what that special bond is between a brother and a sister, and how deeply it hurts to lose him. I miss mine so much, just as you do. I wish you didn’t know how this feels, but please also know that unfortunately you and I aren’t alone in our heartache. We never walk this path alone. Keep being strong and positive. I felt comforted and ‘connected’ to you and your brother when I read your loving words. I share your loss. Thank you for loving your brother so much.

Respectfully,
Carmen Stevenson

To Deputy Kievernagel and his loved ones:

On this the eighth month after your tragic death, please know that your memory is honored and revered today.

My heart is still with your family and I look forward to meeting them in Sacramento and/or D.C. You’re all in our thoughts and our prayers.

Joseph, you rescued us, saved our possessions, our lives and our families. You are one of the rare heroes among us. You were always there for us in the most traumatic moments of our lives. No matter when we called, we just expected that you would come and do whatever it took to help us, and you always met our expectations. Your selflessness and dedication are awe-inspiring.

This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.

Rest in Peace, Deputy Joseph Kievernagel. I am so humbled by your valor and courage.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Joseph gave to his community and the citizens of Califonia, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on July 13, 2005.

Joe was my brother, a person who I admired more than any other person I know. He was a great officer, a wonderful brother and he was loved by everyone who knew him. I will remember Joe as a fine Deputy who loved flying and who loved his family, and his wife.
Joe and Kevin will never be forgotten. I thank God for the time I had to be his older sister. He will always be in my thoughts and I know he is watching over all of us still keeping us safe.
He and Kevin will always be "Our Heros in the Sky"
