Forgive me for missing the anniversary of your E.O.W., but I felt as though I could not continue to read about so many tragedies. I now realize the visit each day to leave a word of encouragement and hope to the loved ones of others, helps me to remember that I am not alone with my pain and heartbreak. So may I say to your friends and loved ones that my thoughts and prayers are with them now and always. Continue to keep watch over them and those still out on patrol and may they know you will never be forgotten. James Sheppard Father of Sgt. Jason L. Sheppard EOW 12/7/06 2009-02-20

You'll meet him someday............ Jim Oliver Friend, Former GW County Deputy 2008-02-19
Its not that good but I still wrote it for you and I love you!!
You left this earth a hero, because of how you lived, I'm growing up to be like you, and always help a friend, you taught me how to care, and God used you to help answer my prayers, when he gave me you, my fears left to, they dissapeared, yes all my fears, and you dried my tears, you held me tight, said it would be alright, you were my dad, because mine wasn't around, now im all alone, missing you so, wishing you were here, holding me close, and I love you more, than you will ever know, Just want to her you say again, Greenwood One 10-8
I LOVE YOU MATT AND I MISS YOU!!!!

Judge imposes jury recommendation of death for Cheever
The Associated Press EUREKA, Kan. — The man who shot and killed a southeast Kansas sheriff has been sentenced to death.
A shackled Scott Cheever listened Wednesday as District Judge Mike Ward imposed the sentence of death that a jury set Nov. 1 after just two hours of deliberations. By law, a jury must agree that the death penalty should be imposed, but a judge must approve it.
Ward denied requests by Cheever's lawyers to reconsider life without parole.
Cheever was convicted of capital murder for killing Greenwood County Sheriff Matt Samuels on Jan. 19, 2005. Samuels was gunned down in a rural farmhouse while serving arrest warrants on Cheever for allegedly stealing firearms from his stepfather and not reporting to his parole officer.
Cheever had been making methamphetamine in a house in the remote Hilltop area of Greenwood County.

Matt, If tears could build a stairway, and memories a lane. I would walk right up to Heaven and bring you back again.
No farewell words were spoken. No time to say "Goodbye". You were gone before I knew it, and only GOD knows why.
My heart still aches with sadness, and secret tears still flow. What it meant to Love You- No one can ever know.
But now I know you want me to mourn for you no more; To remember all the happy times, life still has much in store.
Since you'll never be forgotten, I pledge to you today- A hollowed place within my heart is where you'll always stay.
We All Miss You!

Matt, I remember you coming in to Mrs. Evan's 4th Hour Communications class and telling us all about your wonderful career and your life. I can still remember you standing outside of the Sheriff's Department and I would come over and talk to you for the few minutes a day that I could spare. You used to give me encouragement to better my life and to do what I love. All of us here in Greenwood County all love you and miss You. To Tammy and the Kids, Sta strong, because Matt would really hate to see you give up hope. You will all see Him agin one day, seated with the Father and the Son in heaven. All of us here in Greenwood county are so sorry that this has happened Homer Wilson Jr. Friend 2007-10-31
The Badge" He starts his shift each day To respond to calls unknown. He drives a marked patrol car. A police officer he is known. He's paid by the citizens' taxes To make it safe on the streets. But he usually has a second job 'Cause a waitress has his salary beat. Now he doesn't know a holiday 'Cause he works all year round. And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive At his home he cannot be found. He's cursed and assaulted often, The one whos blood runs blue. He seldom ever gets a thanks, To some he's just a fool. His friends are always other cops 'Cause people just don't understand That underneath his badge and gun, He's just another man. He knows there might not be a tomorrow In this world of drugs and crime. And he gets so mad at the court system 'Cause the crooks don't get any time. And each day when he leaves for work, He prays to God above. Please bring me home after my shift So I can see the ones I love. But tonight he stops a speeding car, He's alone down this ole' highway. It's just a little traffic infraction. He does it everyday. Well, he walks up to the driver's window, And his badge is shining bright. He asked the guy for a driver's license, When a shot rang through the night. Yes, the bullet hit its mark, Striking the officer in the chest. But the Department's budget didn't buy Each officer a bullet-proof vest. So he lay on the ground bleeding. His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red. And briefly he thought of his loved ones 'Cause in a moment the officer was dead. In the news they told the story Of how this officer had died. And some who listened cared less, But those who loved him cried. Well, they buried him in uniform With his badge pinned on his chest. He even had his revolver, He died doing his best.
