I remember being at a church in Longview Texas. You were there and for some reason my dad knew who you were. I was 10 years old and I wanted to test you, I wanted to see if you could catch me. I thought to myself, maybe you were to big of a man to catch me on foot. I ran and it was less than 20 yards before you caught me and playfully cuffed me. I'm not sure how or why but my dad knew who you were. When I was old enough he told me about your death. When I was old enough he showed me the recording of your death. I had never been so angry, hurt or sad up to that point than I was when I watched them. I watched them take you down, tackle you and pull out YOUR gun and shoot you. My dad said you never wanted a partner, and that you liked to go it alone but you carried a camcorder on the dash of your patrol car. At that time noone carried a camcorder with them but that was your way of getting out of having a partner. I'm not certain how much truth there is to that but my dad never lies to me. Darrell your death has saved many lives and I find it very refreshing to find this site 15 years later where I can pay my respects. Much Love Sir, Good Night :)

Pawpaw-
I love you so much and I'm sad that you couldn't be with me throughout the years of growing up. How much I would have loved to have you there on my graduation day can't be spoken through words. I miss you everyday. I know your in a better place now, watching me everyday from above. I'll make you the proudest grandfather of a Texas Aggie. I love you and one day we can all get together again and eat Popsicles, just like before :)

Constable Lunsford,

Know that even in death, you have saved so many other law enforcement officers' lives. You are not forgotten. I honor your sacrifice to the people of Nacadoches County and the great State of Texas. I will never forget. Rest easy, brother.

To the families, both related and fraternal, of Darrell Lunsford;
Many times we hear derogatory statements about uniformed men and women who defend our freedoms, and it hurts my heart every time! Without law enforcement, fire, medical, military, or any other individuals who protect and guard us, there would be many more human tragedies than we have now. It's like the media; bad news is headlined but good news is ignored or put where it can't be seen or heard. There are many more good and heroic officers like Darrell Lunsford out there, but we don't hear about them unless they are maimed or killed. Unfortunantly, people prefer news about those things rather than the ones that give us comfort and confidence in our safety every day. I wish to honor Darrell Lunsford, along with all the other uniformed persons who have died in the line of duty. This is done by keeping their names and stories alive and never failing to talk about them. Thank you for this opportunity to express my gratitude for all those who put thir lives on the line every day for my sake. God Bless You ALL!!!! God Bless, comfort, and keep all the families of those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. THANK YOU.

Sir you are missed by soo many people. I never got the chance to know you but I have never heard a bad word spoke about you. Even though this happened to you and your watch has ended you are still protecting your brothers out there. You saved my life one day and I will be forever grateful. We watched the video in the academy and the same thing happened to me. Thank you soo very much and my heart goes out to your family and loved ones.

I saw your video today in a street survival seminar. I learned from it greatly. I wished I could have been there with you but you did not go in vain. 200 other officers learned as well. I'm sure heaven is great....hold it down until we all get there.

Tonight at home here in the UK i watched a tv programme which showed the videotape of your last night of duty. I am in tears knowing that there are men out there who are capable of such brutality, but on the other hand i am filled with pride knowing that there are men such as you who put their lives on the line every day to protect us. My niece has recently joined the police force and i am so proud of her as i am sure your family are proud of you. Sir, god bless you and your family and to all police officers everywhere....thankyou.

I remember seeing this video on COPS also, I was horrified!! Constable Lunsford may you now Rest in Peace and Thank You for your service, Sir. As a result of this outrageous act, video cameras are in all patrol cars now..Your sacrifice probably saved many officers lives since that terrible day.

I watched a Cops television show and watched the horrible death of officer Lunsford. It was such a horrible tragedy, and when I found out he died from the attack I felt my heart drop in my chest. His life was sacrificed to get those horrible people behind bars, and his death brought police to start video surveillance in cop vehicles. I feel sorrow and sympathy for Lunsford and family, and feel disgust that there are people out there who could do such a thing.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Constable Lunsford,
On today, the 17th anniversary of your murder, I would like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for the citizens of Nagodoches County. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy. Like alot of other people who have already left reflections here, I remember seeing video as well when I went through the Academy as well as during firearms requalification training and it sickens me everytime-I just wish your murderers could have gotten the justice they really deserve-DEATH.
