Forgive me for missing the anniversary of your E.O.W., but I felt as though I could not continue to read about so many tragedies. I now realize the visit each day to leave a word of encouragement and hope to the loved ones of others, helps me to remember that I am not alone with my pain and heartbreak. So may I say to your friends and loved ones that my thoughts and prayers are with them now and always. Continue to keep watch over them and those still out on patrol and may they know you will never be forgotten.

I still have images of you and Monique sitting in the back of your truck wrapping Christmas gifts. And the special Christmas we spent. I can almost here the giggling and laughing.

We think about you often, but more lately. We know you helped bring Derel home safely from Iraq. Thank you. Now as Derek begins his tour in Iraq we ask you to please watch over him. You always looked after them as kids in LaGrange and we find comfort in being able to ask you to please do it again! We believe that you have brought DJ closer to us again. It is far less traveling to visit! We miss you...we will see you again.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I had the honor of visiting The Wall in March in Washinton, D.C. and finding your name. It was an emotional day. I am speaking next week for the Memorial Week and I am quite sure I won't make it through this story without tears. Happy Birthday Dyke! I still think about you everyday and you are so much a part of our lives. I know your here with us and I can almost hear you laugh when we talk of the old days when we were all together. One of the last comments you made to us a week before you left us was "What the heck is going on up there?" Lives go on here but not without missing you bunches.

Mommy just told me about this page where I can come and read comments about you from others. Mommy and I just talked about you on the 8th of January. It has been 5 years and I SURE MISS YOU!!! I was only 2 was this happened, but I have all my pictures of you and letters that people have sent to me.
I always tell my friends at school about you. I am now going to a special school and they had me read about the angels in heaven because of you.
