Crossing the Bar
Alfred Lord Tennyson

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.

It's September 10. Tonight will make 8 yrs since I received the dreaded call...."We have an Officer down", the dispatcher stated. "You need to come out, the perp is still at large". Those words haunt me every day, but especially on this date. As all the past years, I will not be able to work tonight, It's like a sickness overwhelms me on this date.
Please watch over all our brothers and sisters tonight, I would hate to see another one perish on such a dreaded day.
Still Missing You Brother.....Remember, you are "NEVER FORGOTTEN"

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

You, as well as other officers, are a pure symbol of sacrifice. The amount of heart, dedication, and caring it takes to sacrifice everything for others. I remember when you and Tom would come in the ER together and would share your human and joking qualities when you had a moment to. When I heard what had happened, I was filled with shock and disbelief. I kept thinking, well myself and another SMH employee were just talking and joking around with him a few days ago. It was a type of sad I never felt before. I was sad (and still am) because you are gone, but honored at what you gave for your community to protect it. I thank you and all the other officers who help us when we call and protect us when we are threatened. Thank you.

Not a single day and usually not a single hour has went by that I do not think of you and rarely without tears. As so much has changed in my life since your untimely and senseless death, I often find myself wondering how things would be if you were still with us. I miss you so much Bill. I still remember the first call we went on together, the first time I met you. It seems like just yesterday. You were definitely my inspiration in changing career fields and moving up to the federal level. I wish you coulda been here to have done the same, but I know how much you loved the job. I'll NEVER forget you brother.
NEVER FORGOTTEN.

Hard to believe it has been 7 years. Some days it seems like a lifetime ago, other days it feels like it just happened. Please know you will not be forgotten and always in my heart. I wish you could know the love and respect that your fellow officers and citizens have for you. Thanks to the public for the continued prayers and honor they show you and for your brothers & sisters in uniform who place their lives on the line every day.

Weep not for me, though I am gone
Into that gentle night.
Grieve if you will, but not for long
Upon my soul's sweet flight.
I am at peace, my soul's at rest
There is no need for tears.
For with your love, I was so blessed
For all those many years.
There is no pain, I suffer not,
The fear now all is gone.
Put now these things out of your thoughts,
In your memory I live on.
Remember not my fight for breath,
Remember not the strife,
Please do not dwell upon my death,
But celebrate my life.

It is a terrible sad story. I am a DWI Officer in Texas, and have on many occasions brought prisoners in for processing and breathalyzer test. I never even imagined that happening, but I thought back and realized, that I am sure prisoners have been brought in without getting processed through the jail (sometimes you get so focused on making sure your case goes well), or didn't get searched thoroughly by me or another person. I am sure it happens. But, I will think of Dep. Giacomo and will do my best to never let that happen to anyone or myself. I am sure that is what Giacomo would want, for people to learn from this tragedy. May God bless his family.

September 23rd, 2006 will mark the 6th Annual Deputy Bill Giacomo Memorial Golf Tournament that is held in honor of Deputy Giacomo. It is amazing to see the bond that officers have and how families become one at the loss of another officer. I am proud to be a part of the memorial tournament that honors Billy and brings his friends and fellow officers together to remember that they give the ultimate sacrifice. Thanks again Deputy 219.

This Sept. 11th will mark six years since you were taken so tragically from your family, friends, and the Nicholas County S.O. I watched the ceremony on the news the other day where they named a bridge in your honor, it was a very good story it just sad that your not still here with us. Your memory and legacy still lives on today and you will never be fogotten. Its not how this officer died that made him a hero, its how he lived everyday that made him a hero.
You're the true defintion of a HERO.
RIP Billy

I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to Giacomo family and the entire Nicholas County Sheriff's Dept. I didn't know Dep. Giacomo personally, but I live in WV and have been to Nicholas County many times and this tragic loss hits close to home. I talked to a few of the local deputies from my county that particapted in the manhunt and attended the funeral. They told me that it was truly one of the saddest days in WV law enforcement history, when they laid to rest one of thier fellow brothers. Giacomo was such a great deputy and a truly great person. I belive that there are only a select few that can perform the duties of law enforcement officers, and I believe Dep. Giacomo was one of those people. He went above and beyond the call of duty, and gave his life for the citizens of Nicholas County. Now we are left to pick up the pieces of such a tragic loss, Giacomo is gone but will never be forgotten, because I know that Dep. Giacomo is upstairs patrolling the streets of heaven. I would like to thank him for his service and dedication that he displayed as a deputy sheriff, the law enforcement and corrections community has lost a true and brave hero. It would have been a true honor to have been able to meet Dep. Giacomo and those who had the oppurtunity were very lucky.
God Bless

It is sad when a fellow man is brutally murdered while doing his job, especially at such a young age. This has hit home ever since it happened. My uncle Pete Sovine ran this jail for many years. I knew many of the deputies of your county, some I grew up with, such as the Trumans. Some I have been frineds with for years. Youu have an elite troop there. My brother lost his life in 1988 while working in Nicholas County. So, you see, these sort of senseless crimes hit home for me. My heart goes out to all of you folks in Nicholas county and to the family of this fallen hero. May God Bless You all.

A true warrior and hero would describe Dep. W.G Giacomo. i heard about the tragic story from one local deputies here in the county and when he told me the story it just sickened me to here how we could all lose a great deputy such as Dep. Giacomo in such a senseless and tragic act. I live in WV and i'm proud and grateful for the work that Dep. Giacomo did for the people of Nicholas County and the state of WV, he died doing what he loved so greatly to do. Dep. Giacomo rest in peace fallen soldier you will never be forgotten no matter what, you taken from us so tragically but sometimes god just has other plans for his true heros here on earth.

R.I.P Deputy W.G Giacomo
Thanks for everything that u did

He was one of America's red, white, and blue
One who believed in protecting you.
We took him for granted day to day
Called him when someone troubled our way.
We did not give thought to the life he had
Or that he might have a mom or dad.
That he himself had a wife at home
Who prayed each day not to be alone.
He answered the call of a DUI
By the hands of a criminal, he did die.
A community in shock that in their small town
An evil man shot a good man down.
He gave his life for you and for me
That our little town might be crime free.
We should all mourn
We should all cry
That one of our heros had to die.

Missed by family and friends......

One night a police officer had a dream. The officer dreamed of walking along the beach with the lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from the officers life. For each scene the officer noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, one belonging to the officer the other to the Lord. When the last scene appeared the officer looked back at the footprints and noticed many times along the path that there was only one set of footprints in the sand. The officer also noticed this happened during the lowest and saddest times in the officers life. This really bothered the officer who questioned the Lord: "Lord you said that once this officer decided to follow you, you would walk along with this officer all the way. But this officer noticed that during the most troublesome times in this officer's life, there is only one set of footprints. This officer does not understand why when this officer needed you most you would leave this officer." The Lord replied, "My child, I love you and would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."
