Remembering you today on this 9th anniversary of your ultimate sacrifice. I can't believe it's been 9 years. I was only in the academy when your accident occurred and never had the opportunity to meet you, but I have met several people who worked with you and they all have good things to say. I am remembering your family and friends today as well, because I know, while the pain may become dull, it never really goes away.

Thank you for your dedication to service, to our department and to the citizens of Oklahoma City. You are absolutely not forgotten.

Remembering you and the sacrifice you made that terrible day that took place just over eight years ago. I can't believe it's been that long, but know that you are not forgotten.

I remember when you would come into the jail and we would tease you about your braces. I remember calling you brace face and you said you get that all the time. I only got to know you through the course of dealing with the people you arrested and brought into jail. But for the brief time you were around... I could always count on you smiling and showing off that metal mouth! Just know that you are loved not forgotten in this department.

I was stationed with Jeff on the USS Holland worked in the same shop. I've been searching for old friends when I found this memorial. I only wish I would have started my search years earlier.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I was stationed with Jeff back in 83. Wish I would have searched from him years back now. He was a great friend and we had some really good times. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

To the family and loved ones of Officer Jeffrey Dean Rominger and his fellow officers with the Oklahoma Ciy Police Department:

On this the sixth anniversary of Jeff's tragic death, I wanted to honor and remember him today. Jeff's professionalism and dedication will never be forgotten, nor will his valor and courage. I also salute his patriotism to our country through his distinquished service in the US Navy.

In reading the loving reflections left by his friends and co-workers I can see that he was very loved, well respected and is sorely missed. I hope that God is holding him in the sweetest part of his heart and the most gentle part of his soul.

No doubt that Heaven has another hero in Jeff, but I am so sorry you had to lose your beloved. To his mother, I too share your anquish of having lost a cherished son in a line of duty death. May you all continue to be comforted by your faith and your law enforcement family and other police survivors.

August 31, 2000 must have been the darkest of days for law enforcement in Oklahoma when this tragedy claimed two officers.

I am so sorry that Jeff was robbed of his life so young and so tragically, but through his heroism and the profound sense of duty with which he lived his life, he made an immeasurable difference. May his spirit continue to soar and may his memory continue to inspire.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Jeffrey gave to his community and the citizens of Oklahoma, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on August 31, 2000.

I was in the police academy and never had the opportunity to meet you, yet I still remember exactly where I was when I found out about the accident that so abruptly took your life. I remember the sadness I felt without ever even meeting you.

I had no idea at that time that the man that would become my husband, Sgt. Jonathan Dragus, would be the next name added just underneath yours on the Oklahoma City Police Memorial.

It's ironic the similarity of the circumstances of both of your deaths being in pursuits and at nearly the same time of the morning.

May God watch over and keep safe all of our brothers and sisters in blue and grey. You and Jonathan will never be forgotten.

Jeff, you were the sorta guy that we all looked to for leadership in the academy. A man that had a firm grasp of what was being asked of him and knew the true definition of the word "DUTY". I was always in awe of you because not only had you survived a long career in the Navy but you were performing even better than all us young bucks in every way. You will forever be a drive for me to do what is right and I will use you as an example when my son asks what "honor" means. See ya Chief

At the time of this accident I was a Senior Airman assigned to the 72nd Security Forces Unit Tinker AFB, OK. On the day of the funeral for Officer Rominger I was assigned to shut down traffic at the Sooner Gate for the funeral prossession. I did not know the fallen hero, but the site of all of those squads with ribbons tied around them still brought a tear to my eye. God Bless our fallen hero, and God Bless his family.

Jeff, I will never forget seeing your face in passing as you left the Jail that night. You were leaving as I was dropping an arrest off, not two hours before your accident. It will always be a reminder to me of how short life is, and to always hug my family when I walk out the door. Rest easy in the arms of the Lord brother.
