On the 10th anniversary of Trooper Hardy's death, we honored his service in our patrol briefing by reading his entry from ODMP. Each day, we honor one fallen officer on the anniversary of their death so as to keep them in our thoughts, and also to remind us of the dangers inherent in our job. Trooper Hardy is not forgotten.

Cousin Frederick. As I sit here in my home in Atlanta, GA, my mind takes me back to this day, ten years ago. The night that I received the phone call, that I had lost one of my favorite cousins, who was more like a brother to me. I started wondering, "what am I going to do?" A part of me is gone and I won't be able to see him on this side anymore. Cuz, I am soooo glad that we both found Christ before it was to late, so I know that I will see you again. Continue to watch over me and my family and hey if you don't mind, tell my dad, your Uncle Joe, that I said hello. I know that you all are having a Joyous time there in heaven. May God continue to bless your Soul until we meet again on that grand day. I love you and miss you everyday.

Trooper Hardy served proudly and was deeply loved and respected by those who knew him. It is a tragedy to lose him. We never know when our lives on this earth will end, but we can make a reservation in Heaven now and assure us a place when God calls us to Himself. Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life (John 14:6) and He PAID the price for our sins on the Cross so we don't have to pay the penalty for our sins. Yipee! If we accept His payment by faith we can have salvation and spend eternity with Him in Heaven. It is not something we must earn, it is a gift. The most precious one we can ever receive. "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith_and this not from yourselves, it is the GIFT of God_not by good deeds, so that no one can boast." Ephesians 2: 8,9. For without faith, it is impossible to please God. And our faith must be in God's only Son, Jesus Christ.
You were a credit to the uniform, Trooper Hardy. My heart goes out to your
loved ones left behind and may the Lord comfort them as only He can.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

It is hard to believe sometimes that human beings have dominion over any other of Father's creation...they can be so unbelievably calloused at times...but, thankfully we all reap what we sow.....

A Million Times

A million times we've needed you,
A million times we've cried.
If love alone could've saved you,
You would have never died.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death we love you still.
In our hearts you hold a place,
No one else could ever fill.
It broke our hearts to lose you,
But you didn't go alone.
Part of us went with you,
The day God took you home.

Fred is my cousin and lives on in my heart. As a child we were more like brothers and sisters all living in one house on Concord street in Detroit. He used to lick soap when he was angry and we would all run from him as if it gave him super powers. I wish it did. Every year at this time which is also close to his birthday, I think more of the good times we had as children. His life is an example for me as I too joined the Armed Forces and am now working with Military Police. He was a wonderful human being who I owe much too. I miss you Frederick. We were 8 kids in that one house together and one day we will be together again.

I remember hearing the news flash that a MSP Trooper had been hit and killed by a hit and run driver.

I was saddened that the driver failed to stop or render assistance. Man's inhumanity to man.

I'm proud of the MSP. I've looked up to them since I was a small boy growing up in Detroit. My friends and I would always say the MSP Troopers look so "sharp."

They still do! Rest in Peace, Trooper Hardy.

Obviously we lost a fine Trooper. Rest in peace.

I was working the same shift as Fred on the night of his death and when I heard his partner outside on prep calling for priority I knew something bad had happened. That is a day that I will never forget. Fred was more than a co-worker to all of his fellow Troops at the Detroit Post. He was a mentor, friend and guardian. He had a quiet humbleness that is not seen to often in our profession. Fred was a family man who was very devoted to God and his family. I had the pleasure of working with this great man on quite a few occassions and it was such a learning experience every time. He was very fair with everyone he encountered on the job, but he knew when it was time to take care of business. I remember my first week at the Detroit Post, I was trained by Fred. As I sat in that patrol car in the middle of summer and saw Fred dealing with four different accidents at the same time, I thought there is no way Im ever going to be able to work down here. But I learned just like we all do. "Freddy Bear" there is not one day that goes by that I dont think about you and I know I will see you again someday. Until then be my guardian and watch over my family, mainly, and through a little something my way from time to time.
Your friend always, Tpr. William Priest, badge #1405

Trooper Hardy,

I wrote a poem for you. It is called Tears for a Lost Trooper. Having friends in the MSP and seeing their pain, made me write it.

I had the honor and pleasure to work with Tpr. Hardy.  He brought to this world a hard working, fun loving attitude that rubbed off on all those around him   Fred was a man who treated everyone he met with respect.  His departure came well before his time should have been up.  I know that Fred is in Heaven looking down on all of us at the Post, smiling and watching over us.  We miss you Fred.
