"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day To respond to calls unknown. He drives a marked patrol car. A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes To make it safe on the streets. But he usually has a second job 'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday 'Cause he works all year round. And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often, The one whos blood runs blue. He seldom ever gets a thanks, To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops 'Cause people just don't understand That underneath his badge and gun, He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow In this world of drugs and crime. And he gets so mad at the court system 'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work, He prays to God above. Please bring me home after my shift So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car, He's alone down this ole' highway. It's just a little traffic infraction. He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window, And his badge is shining bright. He asked the guy for a driver's license, When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark, Striking the officer in the chest. But the Department's budget didn't buy Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding. His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red. And briefly he thought of his loved ones 'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story Of how this officer had died. And some who listened cared less, But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform With his badge pinned on his chest. He even had his revolver, He died doing his best.

Trooper Mark Wagner,
I know your time on earth was short, but GOD must have needed another ANGEL in HEAVEN. I remember the day you passed. My father's the Chief Deputy in Morrill County, and I have many friends in the State Patrol. I know every officer in this state mourned the loss of a GRAND officer, and more, a friend. I hope your passing never gets lossed, but I pray for the easy of the burden on you family. GOD BLESS YOU, and your family. Corrections Officer Tyler L. Dean

I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to the family, coworkers, and friends of Trooper Wagner. Many of our brothers and sisters are gone, but none are ever forgotten. May you rest in peace. Then I heaard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send? and Who will go for us? And I said "Here I am. Send Me!" ISAIH 6:8 Mike G. Federal Law enforcement Agency 2005-05-20
a piece of us went with you...

Mark,
I think about you alot. We lost a good one. I still remember my first arrest was riding with you. You and your family were a great welcoming committee when the new troops arrived in town. We remember North Platte fondly because of you. Anonymous

May God grant your family closure and comforting peace. In your absence, may he somehow assure them that you have transcended from this Earthly bond to the ultimate duty -- patroling the streets of heaven under God's command. Rest easy knowing that your brothers and sisters in arms will continue the fight, and eventually join you for a reunion in a far better place than this. Your devotion to duty will stand as an example to many others that follow you. God speed to your assignment, and God bless the remaining peacemakers.

You will not be forgotten...even though I never had the pleasure of meeting you, I've met people LIKE you. Thanks for all you did. I know accidental gunfire is no fun...in June of 2001 I lost Cpl. Joey Cushman of the Arlington PD of Texas. Today marks the 3-month anniversary and I know how tough it is. Thank you for protecting us. Rest in peace. Casey 9.7.01.
I worked with Mark nearly his entire career. I was with him minutes before his untimely passing. He was a Troop you always wanted to hear headed your way when things were going downhill fast. I don't think I've known a finer person. We all miss you. I'm off the road now and trying to pass along 15+ years of experience and knowledge of working the street to kids that don't yet know what they are getting into. They start with such good intentions, not knowing what the job really is. I miss you and think of you daily. I'll stop by to visit next time I'm in town.jt Anonymous
