"WE OWN THE NIGHT"

My academy class was graduating and your funeral was on the same day. I remember the Mayor saying that we will always be linked with you. All these years later I still think about that day. RIP

Kevin, As another year has gone by, it remains important to me that you are not forgotten. I will not forget you and the laughs and the good times in the PJ's and in the 73. The command is different now, some more of the fellas are with you now. Continue to watch out for us and rest in peace as you walk a beat on heavens streets.

Always in my prayers brother,

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

WE OWN THE NIGHT..... Simply said by many, understood by an very few.

This story shall the good man teach his son; From this day to the ending of the world, We in it shall be remembered...
We few... We happy few... We band of brothers... For he to-day that sheds his blood with me... Shall Always be my brother......

I served as the jury foreman in the case of the murder of Officer Gillespi. I often wonder how his wife and children are doing. It has been 10 years and yet I remember the case as if it was yesterday. I wanted to let his family know that he will forever be in my prayers as will you. May god bless you all. His spirit "OWNS THE NIGHT".

To Officer Kevin Gillespie and his loved ones:

On this the tenth anniversary of your tragic death, please know that your memory is honored and revered today.

My heart goes out to your family. You’re in our thoughts and our prayers.

Officer Gillespie, you rescued us, saved our possessions, our lives and our families. You are one of the rare heroes among us. You were always there for us in the most traumatic moments of our lives. No matter when we called, we just expected that you would come and do whatever it took to help us, and you always met our expectations. Your selflessness and dedication are awe-inspiring.

You also served your counry as a Marine. My beloved son Larry Lasater was fatally shot on April 23, 2005. He too was your brother in green as well as in blue.

This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.

Rest in Peace, Officer Gillespie. Semper Fi.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service Kevin gave to his community and the citizens of New York, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on March 14, 1996.

Phyllis Loya, mother of fallen officer Larry Lasater, Pittsburg PD, eow 4/24/05

I NEVER DREAMED IT WOULD BE ME

I never dreamed it would be me,
My name for all eternity,
Recorded here at this hallowed place,
Alas, my name, no more my face.

"In the line of duty," I hear them say:
My family now the price to pay.
My folded flag stained with tears;
We only had those few short years.

The badge no longer on my chest,
I sleep now in eternal rest.
My sword I pass to those behind,
And pray they keep this thought in mind.

I never dreamed it would be me,
And with heavy heart and bended knee,
I ask for all here from the past:
Dear God, let my name be the last.

I had the great honor and pleasure to have worked with Kevin on the midnight shift at PSA 2 and we had many good times. There was never anything that he wouldn't do for you. I never met a more dedicated cop who loved his job as much as he did. His famous catch phrase at the end of every roll call, before we went out into the street was "BE SAFE". We lost a great friend and true hero and may he rest in peace eternally. He will never be forgotten and it is an honor to have known him and worked side by side together. He is sorely missed and always in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless.
