For more than 20 years, Oscar Joel Bryant (RIP Devil Dawg) was thought to be the First Black LAPD Officer to be killed in the Line - of - Duty. However, one of my classmates (Lapd Lieutenant John Thomas) discovered that the above Officer was actually the first. Because the Los Angeles newspapers refused to carry a photograph of a Black Officer, a photograph of a White Officer with the same name was carried in the newspapers leading to the confusion.....

Your unknown sacrifice truly embodies the spirit of all that wear or wore the badge or shield in pursuit of "Protecting and Serving" the American people throughout the years, quietly, valiantly and always with dignity. You are a true American hero...you now belong to the ages.

Officer Williams -

We mourn your loss and regret that history kept your full story from us for so long.

Thanks to Lt. John Thomas for discovering your story and making us all aware of the significance of your sacrifice on behalf of our City.

May God grant you eternal rest.

Thank you for pioneering the way for many others such as yourself who were/are willing to make a difference and this world a better place.

Don't grieve for me for now I'm free,
I'm following the path God laid for me.
I took His hand when I heard Him call,
I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day,
To laugh, to love, to work, or play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way,
I've found a peace at the close of the day.

If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,
Ah yes, these things I too will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow,
I wish you all the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life's been full, I've savored so much,
Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all to brief,
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your hearts and share with me,
for God wanted me now, He set me free.

Semper Fidelis....(Always Faithful)
