YOU ARE REMEMBERED TODAY AND THANK YOU SIR FOR YOUR SERVICE VANDENBERGHE MANCHESTER, NH 2007-12-29
What a wonderful page. I thank you for the opportunity to provide a little information about the man behind the badge.
Like a lot of men of his era. Dad answered the call to duty in WWII. He served honorably in the United States Marines, participating in the island campaigns of Tarawa, Saipan (where he was wounded in action), Tinian, Okinawa and finally the occupation of Japan.
He returned to civilian life as first a bus driver and later a police officer in “The City”. His career with the SFPD was interrupted in 1950 when he was recalled to duty with the Marines for service in Korea. There he participated in the assault and seizure of Inchon and the liberation of Seoul among other assignments.
After Korea, he returned to the SFPD where he served honorably and with distinction until his death.
His wife remarried. A wonderful man who helped raise his children and all turned out well.
Had he survived to date, he would have suffered the early loss of both of his brothers and later his wife and parents. He is survived today by his three children, six grandchildren, one great granddaughter and a wonderful loving sister.
