Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Patrol Officer Craig Alan Nollmeyer

I will never for get this day. Craig was my husband's best friend, and I never saw him weep like he did after that day, before or since. Craig was a wonderful person, and gave his life for his fellow officer and even for strangers. My love to his family.

I do not remember Craig. He is the one that introduced my parents to each other formally at Multnomah Bible College back in the 70's. They spoke glowingly of him and mourned his death. I never forgot his example to protect and serve.

Remembering Craig today as I met with Aurora, CO police officer Jim Seneca, who is the Founder and President of Cops Fighting Cancer here in Aurora, CO.... I always feel blessed to be around guys like this who are willing to "stand in the gap" for all of us.... Craig and Patty Nollmeyer were friends of ours from our church in Lakewood, WA. I look forward to seeing Craig again...

...and to his son Trevor, thank-you Trevor for taking up the shield...

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 27th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never dimishes respect, and your memory will always be honored and revered. I pray for the solace of all those who love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever, I hold your family in my heart's embrace today.

Rest In Peace

You are not forgotten, despite the passage of time. You live on through your daughter, Emily, who is a delightful young woman and so proud of you and your service.

You never knew I'd "adopted" you as my brother. I always thought your sister was so lucky having a brother. But you were more than that - you were a friend. I remember when I came back from New York you were one of the first ones I saw at Church - so grown with children of your own, no longer that kid who ran around his car to see if he could get back to the driver's seat before the light turned green!!
I will never forget the day I heard you were shot in a domestic violence call. I couldn't believe it. Almost 25 years later, it's still hard to believe. But the Lord called you Home that night and I thank Him often for bringing the Nollmeyer's into my life back in high school. I know you are with the Lord one day I will see you again my Little Brother.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I never knew Officer Nollmeyer, but I know his son, Trevor. Trevor is one of my best friends and the thing I respect most about Trevor is that he still honors his father through his own work as a dedicated police officer in Spokane. I have the honor of being a groomsmen at his wedding. I only wish Officer Craig Nollmeyer could know what a decent human being his son has become.

At the beginning of every shift, myself and the other officers I supervise dedicate the shift to the memory of a fallen officer. Today (Jan. 24, 2003) we dedicated the shift to the memory of Patrol Officer Nollmeyer, who died on this date years ago. His sacrifice will never be forgotten by law enforcement officers everywhere.

Sgt. Paul Bissonnette

When I was a store Detective, you used to come to my calls, I always remember you as a fair and good person, I was sad to hear of your passing, yous was the first law enforcement funeral I attended... now all these years later I am in Corrections and had attended seven more funerals for Officers I have known and worked with. I still pray for your family.
